How do I tighten the ac belt on 1997 Subaru Legacy?

I bought the vehicle used and it came without the AC Belt. Purchased a replacement belt, put it on, but can't figure out how to tighten it.

Subaru Legacy Drive Belt Replacement

". Loosen the lock nut, back off the adjusting bolt and install the new belt after removing the old one."

Mind you, the previous owner may have left it off because bad compressor, a/c leak, or other problem... Get a can or 2 r134a and you may have to add some along with a small can of oil to test the system

A power steering dosent need bleeding. If you replaced it a week ago and was fine until now then it's not an air problem. Power steering fluid is pumped through the system even when the steering is not being used. Definatly not an airlock problem. Cheer's

How to tighten fan belts on 1997 Subaru 2.2 Legacy

there are no fan belts - there is a alternator/power steering belt and a air conditioning belt. There is an adjustment bolt that you will need to tighten. You want to have roughly 1/4" of slack or so after tightening the belt. I recommend taking a look at a service manual for the location.

AC not working

Check belt for adjustment as loose belts as loose belts can cause a squeal if that is ok then it's possible that the AC compressor is locked up. Remove the belt and turn compressor by hand and see if it spins freely if it doesn't there is your noise. While you are at it spin all pulleys by hand feel for rough turning and listen for noises.

I think you have a engine accessory drive belt problem, check the belt, is it cracked or shiny looking? if so replace it with a factory belt, they aftermarket belts many times fit poorly and make noise again very quickly.
