You're burning oil and it takes the catalytic converter a bit to start doing that for you. Something's come unsealed!
It's common enough; try to sort valve clearances and EGR/turbo obstructions by looking at the computer log, then if not sorted pick a date to pop the head and seals off and place seals anew. Nice car.

SOURCE: white smoke from exhaust

not sure what your question is regarding but white smoke coming out of the exhaust usually means water is getting into the cylinder. If this is the case then you never know when the motor is going to go so just do whatever you need to do as quicky and cool as possible

SOURCE: Suzuki Vitara V6, MAF sensor, white smoke.

i have a simialer problem but i was getting neat fuel out the exhaust as well . i removed the engine because id got a replacement then stripped the old one and as i thought it was a valve timing problem.looking at the engine from the front the cams on the left bank had jumped one tooth out of time so fuel was not being burnt and coming straight through the exhaust.strangely it didnt seem to have a big missfire and idling and smoke got worse when warm.

Hyundai i10 coldstart problem. Please help

White smoke is an indicator of moisture. All cars will show water vapor at start up as heating up drives moisture out of the exhaust system AND the combustion of fuel produces water vapor. Until things warm up, slight white "smoke" can be seen coming from the exhaust. If there is a lot of smoke, more than a normal car starting up, that could be radiator fluid leaking into the combustion chamber. Is the radiator fluid level going down? If it is, that it could be a gasket leaking.

Tractor has been stood, had new head gasket but smokes white smoke and loses power when warm. What is wrong with it.. Any ideas..

Run a radiator pressure test or test for carbon monoxide vapor in the radiator. You have a cracked head or block if the head gasket was installed correctly. Note the installation would include measuring the block and head for warp.

My opel vectra 2008 diesel is Hard to Start when left for a period of time.iw will start when turned over a couple of times and with alot of white smoke from the exhaust.

If it doesn't do this when operating at regular intervals, I wouldn't be overly concerned. White smoke is normal for cold diesels, as long as it is only at start up and stops when warmed up. You may have a pump starting to lose its prime though. That would account for having to turn it over a few times after it has sat for a while.

I have a Z24 Cavalier and theres white smoke coming out the exhaust and timing chain makes a lil rattle noise when I first start it in the morning and tends to stall until it reaches the temp of 165ish...

So if it's not consuming oil and you are SURE to fill the radiator to PROVE it's not burning coolant ... then the other suspects are head gasket and .... A puff of smoke upon start-up could be caused by valve guide seals allowing some oil to leak down into the cylinders while the car is parked and not running. This would be pretty common on a nine year old car and should not, in most cases, be cause for concern - See more at: http://community.cartalk.com/discussion/2280708/white-smoke-from-exhaust-upon-cold-start#sthash.05fuptIx.dpuf

If it's blue-white then What you might be seeing is oil burn-off from leaking valve guide seals. The next time you have the oil/filter changed, have a high mileage oil installed. - See more at: http://community.cartalk.com/discussion/2294478/white-smoke-coming-from-the-tail-pipe#sthash.jVo0zDhw.dpuf

Would a defective fuel pump cause white smoke from exhaust?

probably not. White smoke in the exhaust is a sign of either coolant or oil entering the cumbustion chambers (cylinders). Faulty fuel pumps usualy stop delivering fuel to the engine and it won't run at all.
