Set ignition timing subaru j25 dbl o.h. cam - 1999 Subaru Legacy

well hope you were able to suvive this situation

an item for water pump replacement is resetting timing belt which also inches a hydraulic tensioner... just double that that happened otherwise the markets which may have appeared lined up are not when under tension and running


if you are going to redo this operation please use new components parts ... google deluxe timing belt replacement and there will be the package list which includes sprockets, tensioner, etc... it is worth to replace as a set. Even if you are going to sell..pay it forward to the next Subie family member.

Yes indeed. Since they are interference style engines, it is critical that the timing is ok so damage to the motor won't happen.

Some older soobs have bad/intermittent Crank Position Sensors.

also, check the timing belt system for slipped crank/cam timing.

sounds like a timing problem, did you replace the cambelt? or check the idlers for wear? a worn idler could make it jump.

may depends on the engine size sitting there.

2.0 twin cam I4 or V6 2.5L
the j20 cam sensor is on the left rear of cam .
the j25 is same.
here ill toss coin for you, ive answered this on this form 100s of times. now... with photos.
cam sensor are almost always next to front or rear ends of cams.
some v6s have 2. not this V6
ill guess, V6

I would check the injectors for each cylinder, and check for spark in each cylinder.

If the injectors are not firing in all cylinders, it may be a computer.

If spark occurs in some but not all cylinders, it could be an ignition coil.

DISTRIBUTORLESS IGNITION SYSTEM General Information A distributorless ignition system is used on all 2.2L and 2.5L models. The system consists of a cam and crankshaft angle sensor, knock sensor, two ignition coils, an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and assorted sensors. The system control features a quick response learning control method that compares data stored in the ECU memory to data received from the sensors. Thus, the ECU constantly provides the optimum ignition timing in relation to output, fuel consumption, exhaust gas and other variables. The ECU receives signals from the airflow sensor, water temperature sensor, crank angle sensor, cam angle sensor, knock sensor and other various indicators to judge the operating condition of the engine. It then selects the optimum ignition timing stored in the memory and immediately transmits a primary current OFF signal to the igniter to control the ignition timing. The ECU also receives signals emitted from the knock sensor. Ignition timing is controlled so that advanced ignition timing is maintained immediately before engine knock occurs. Two ignition coils are used, one for the No. 1 and No. 2 cylinders, and one for the No. 3 and No. 4 cylinders. A simultaneous ignition type is employed for each bank of cylinders. This eliminates the distributor and achieves maintenance free operation. Ignition control under normal conditions is performed by the ECU measuring engine revolutions. Using the data it receives, the ECU decides the ignition timing according to engine operation. Ignition control under starting conditions is set by the ECU at 10°BTDC.

The number one piston is the farthest forward, always on any engine. It has to be at TDC on the comp stroke, which will also be where the mark is, it is just a dot on the crank pulley aligning to a dot or a v on the case. The cams need to be on the marks too, take out the plugs so you can turn the engine easily by hand. Do not let the valves interfere with the cams, make sure they stay free. If the belt is off which I assume it is, or will be, turn the engine over with the belt on, So you will only have to watch one side. It is a tight fit. I hope you didn't damage anything when it jumped. Check it out.

Replacing the cam seal is really more time consuming than difficult. The EJ-25 motor requires the removal of front covers, timing belt, and the timing gear for the cam that needs replaced. The seal can be replaced without removing the valve cover or cam. The installation is very important on setting the cam timing. Good luck and have a great day.

i cant remember off hand but if you buy the subaru belt it has marks on the belt that coincide with the marks on the cams and crank you cant go wrong

These are specs for a 2.2L which will also work for the 2.5L cuz they are the same picture. Have fun and remember, if you get the timing marks wrong the on the single overhead cam(1st picture) you won't hurt the engine, you'll just have to re-time it. But, if you DO get the timing marks wrong on the duel over head cam engine(2nd picture) you will bend every single valve in both cylinder heads of that engine. If this is your first time(I have to assume it is just to be safe you see) I recommend 2 people performing this task, it's just better that way. Good luck!!!!!!!
