My 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee starts for about five seconds, then turns off? I had to get a new key remote for it, as the original one was lost. How do I programe the new key remote without having to pay mega bux at a proffesional Jeep retailer?
Are you 100% sure its the SKIM??
The ASD relay logic does that. for 6 reasons.
One is the SKIM lamp on? does it even have that?
if yes, its SKIM key if not its the list of things in next link.
programming.
you cant. its TOO LATE for that,
all key shops (car type) do this,
is the SKIM is shutting you down. or the 6 others.
the SCAN TOOL connected shows why, on all 1998 jeeps, USA.?
in USA?
if you HAD connected a scan tool you'd have seen the codes,
for wrong key. ?The SKIM light on the dash dont lie. if present.

now its all just a matter of cost...
towing, or ?
in my town , there is lock smith that will come to my home
for $80 and do this + plus cost of key (transponder)
the $13 key fits 1998 up
here
are the
instructions

I think this car the RKE fob does not have a transponder chip
and does not block the ASD relay
the ASD relay is controlled by the PCM and its many reasons for shutting down , on all jeeps. 93+
the car does have and IMMOblizer on it , (module) and if IT is unhappy the dash lamp does glow saying so, The IMMO talks to the PCM on the comm link. and if the IMMO tells the PCM its unhappy , engine only runs for 3 sec. by design. so what are the dash lights showing? warnings.
on all IMMOs it take 2 keys to make 3. or more , newer the car.
the operators guide covers this. get one.
i cant find 97 data.
is orig. key gray, that is IMMO skim key. but was lost but was it GRAY/?
ok found it in denver page ,very good, facts there.
says 1999 was first year for IMMO, SKIM transponder keys.
if that is true then the ASD is dropping out for the reasons stated in my first link under ASD drop out.
again here is that link
my posts are for NO START< all else is frosting on cake stuff, i cant go to dealer because, the car is DEAD.
No lights at all on dash, only alarm light on dash flashing
so no IMMO light, no key light. no gray key when car was new with 2 original keys, right? if true that means the ASD relay drops out. did you read the ASD page.
the jeeps all have this 1992 to now. all.
skip step 7 cause if no SKIM, IMMO feature.
I did search for you and 1999 is first year of SKIM IMMO.
so that leave 6 reasons for no starts that is, starts for 3 seconds ,
ASD = Automatic shut down Relay, the PCM controls it , if bad happens the PCM drops the relay and the engine stalls, BY DESIGN.
if your car is a USA car, is it? it will be OBD2 complaint and as such any scan tool can scan the engine.
what the shop would do is check all fuses fire, then check that battery voltages are correct 12.6vdc rested is correct. then connect their scan too, and crank the engine for 5 seconds, (min)
the mech, looks for, (just like the page shows) (P1391) (P1398) or p0123,or P0351) P1391) or other DTC errors. if TRUE, he/she, then corrects those first.
i think the PCM will report any cause for ASD to drop. I think so. all it takes is a scan tool, if no tool, its near hopeless. for mosts cars. made now, all EFI engines work like this.... be happy its not a 1988....renix horror.

If you go to the dealer parts dept. they should be able to provide you a printout of instructions to program your remote.

THE THINGS YOU MENTIONED WON'T AFFECT CRANK SPEED. YOU'RE BATTERY IS PROBABLY ON THE WAY OUT THE DOOR. LOOK FOR CORROSION AND LEAKING BATTERYLIKE AROUND TERMINALS AND POSTS. BATTERY IS PROBABLY LOW ON CCA'S. NOW IF TALKING ABOUT WON'T START AND TAKES LONG CRANK TIMES IT CAN BE FUEL PUMP LOSING PRESSURE IN FUEL RAIL OR LACK OF FUEL PRESSURE CONSIDERING WHAT YOU MENTIONED. EVAP SOLENOID WILL USUALY SET A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND WONT AFFECT STARTING USUALLY UNLESS YOU HAVE A HUGE VACUUM LEAK

Hi,You can get new keys from any Jeep dealership. You'll need your ownership and the VIN number (vehicle identification number) That number is located under the windshield on the drivers side bottom corrner.Your best bet is call first to check if anyother information is needed.Good luck hope this has helped,if so please don't forget to rate me......

Unlock all of the Jeep Grand Cherokee's doors and open the driver's side door. Keeping the door open, lock it using the manual lock on the door itself.
Put the manual key into the ignition and switch it to the "On" or "Run" position, whichever applicable, without starting the engine.

Point the remote at the receiver (located by the little bulb on the car ceiling) and hold down the "Lock" button for up to 5 seconds.
When the driver's side door unlocks, you know the remote has been programmed correctly. If you are only programming one remote, jump to the next step. If not, manually re-lock the driver's side door and repeat steps 5 and 6 using each remote you would like to program and then continue.
Turn the key to the "Off" position and turn the ignition on immediately. This must be done within 20 seconds of programming the last remote. You're finished!
