My 1998 lincoln town car keeps running hot. I replace the thermostat, the fan, and the radiator top. When I'm at a red light or in traffic, the car jerks, like it wants to accelerate then shortley after that my temperature gauge rise. My water pump is good, I have no leaks, and no coolant in my engine. What else could it be?

Water pump is bad....replace it....radiator and thermostat been replaced and only thing left is cooling fan and water pump....so either fan isn't turning on or water pump is bad and not circulating water to cool engine

Engine overheating? Try this procedure:

  • The thermostat can be stuck close. If you feel the upper hose very hot and the lower hose cooler than normal, it may be a stuck thermostat.

  • Make sure the radiator and the overflow bottle are filled to the proper levels.

  • Bleed air from the coolant system:This is best done by running the engine with the radiator cap off until you see when the air bubbles stop coming up.

  • Check the radiator fans: The easiest way is to turn on the cars air conditioner and turn up the A/C fans. Both radiator fans should come on when the A/C starts

  • Make a pressure test by using a pressure testing tool (available at most auto parts stores). Use the pressure shown on your radiator cap. Most cars are 16 PSI or less, so don't exceed that pressure. Replace the radiator cap if it doesn't hold the pressure.

The only way to fix it, is to find the leak, and repair it. Hoses? the intake manifolds are famous for cracking behind the alternator if it has a plastic intake manifold. But you are the one that has the car, so You have to find out where the leak is.

SOURCE: I have a 1986 Lincoln Town Car, and it keeps

If you have no leaks and the water pump is pumping ok,then you have a semi clogged radiator.A new replacement at advance is $99.00.This will solve your problem. The sludge buildup is hidden in the radiator and has plugged up a few veins in the radiator causing in proper circulation of the antifreeze water mixture 50/50.This will cause it to overheat in warmer weather and a lot of stop and go traffic.Good luck from here.

2002 lincoln. Ls v8.. burning smell?? Tried to run hot after 15min drive at a red light but when i took off went back to half way? Keeps running hot??

Engine is too hot which is burning oil and road dirt off the engine. Sounds like a bad thermostat or a water pump problem. The radiator may be partially blocked too.

Cooling fan runs intermittently and causes the engine to run hot

The cooling fan isn't causing the engine to run hot, it's electrical and cannot heat an engine. It is turning on in response to your engine running hot. Check coolant level and age, if it's still running hot then check the thermostat - it could be stuck closed. If the thermostat is fine and coolant level is full, it could be partially clogged radiator or head gasket problem (a sure sign of bad head gasket is that your coolant keeps disappearing with no leaks).

This sounds like your cooling fan isn't turning on. One very easy way to test this is to unplug the coolant sensor. On top of the thermostat housing (the plastic box your upper radiator hose runs to) there is a sensor with two wires you can easily see. Unplug this sensor while the car is running and the cooling fan should turn on within a few seconds. If it does not, then you have an issue with the cooling fan. Likely the fan needs to be replaced. If it does come on, then you should replace that sensor you just unplugged. I would also make sure you are getting hot air through the heater vents to verify the water pump is circulating coolant.

Check the fuse for the fan and use a test light to make sure that the circuit is functioning. Warm up your car then feel along the top and bottom of the radiator to check for cold spots. If you find any then you may need to replace your radiator. If your heater isn't currently working it may be that since it is a part of your cooling system.
