there isnt a schematic for valve timing. i need to know a bit more, such as is this an over head cam engine, is it a interference engine, if it is over head cam is it dual over head cams? in general if your number one cylinder is at TDC and all the valves over number one are closed than your valve train is in time. hope this helps

your float chamber in your carb will be blocked.other things will be weights to adjust dwell angle in your distributor base plate will be sticking with rust,and your points and condenser may need changed. trouble is you must do the basic tests on this engine.

According to Gates chart, you engine is an 'interference engine' meaning that the valves and pistons can collide. The belt change interval is 60,000 miles/100,000 km.
I had an engine that could interfere but lucked out and no damage occurred which I established only be removing the cylinder head.
I would not install a new belt without pulling the head and inspecting for damage, otherwise even greater damage may occur if one or more valves are bent or have broken the valve stems. If the head is removed, make sure that it and the block are checked for flatness otherwise a replaced head gasket (must be done if head is removed) may fail prematurely. If either is not flat, they must be resurfaced before reassembly.

The 2.4L four has a belt and is not an interference engine according to the Gates timing belt application chart for your vehicle (check it out on Gates.com.) The 2.7L V-6 doesn't show that it needs a belt--so it has either a timing chain and gears or just gears. If the belt broke on the 2.4L four, you should be able to put on a new belt and go. The engine should not be damaged.

If the timing chain on the V-6 broke then engine damage may have occurred. Chain engines are sometimes not listed as interference because breaking a chain is so rare. The damage would probably be bent valves and damaged piston tops. The labor involved in repairing all that might cost more than just getting a rebuilt engine and putting it in.

Not that it matters now since it is so late but for other viewers, no, it is NOT an interference engine. The 3.5l built from 1993 - 1997 are non-interference engines. It wasn't until 1998 that the engines could be damaged by a broken timing belt.
