SOURCE: 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic with serpentine belt and fan problem or water pump?

Hey Dougnchico,

I'll bet your car died. And it over heated, And the battery was flat
, And the steering went out and every other system run off of the belt.

This is for anybody who has had trouble getting a serpentine belt on. It's easy and doesn't require a prybar.

  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • Locate the tensioner pulley. It's one of the smaller ones and is mounted on a spring loaded arm. It's job, as the name suggests, is to keep the belt tight. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done
Mike

1996 jeep cherokee temp gauge reads hot 10 mins. after start-up

If you have a viscous fan hub then have it replaced as it is not drawing air through the radiator at idle or slow speed (crawling traffic). Check that are no air locks in the system as they will cause heating problems.

My 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is running hot, should I believe it is the water pump? I still have heat.

Yes a bad water pump will definitely cause it to run hot. you'll probably be able to hear it as well as a whinning noise from the front of the engine. Also check for really low or incorrect fluid. jeeps are know for bad water pumps and leaky radiators. the heater pump is a seperate pump from the water pump. Also check for radiator fan opperation while the vehicle is stopped. If the fan is not coming on, it could be a fuse, relay, or intake air temp sensor.

How do i remove my fan clutch on my 96 jeep grand cherokee?

Disconnect battery, remove bolts holding fan shroud, at the water pump where the fan shaft attaches. Unscrew the nut. It will remove the fan from water pump, lift out fan and shroud, 4 bolts holding clutch to fan.

Replacing water pump?

Not difficult. Lean on drivebelt to keep pump from turning while removing fan. The rest is bolt off, bolt back on, make sure all gasket material is off block. If you don't get a manual, draw yourself a belt diagram so you can put it back on. adjustment is either p/s pump or separate adjuster pulley below p/s pump.

Intermittent overheating on 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Sounds like a sticky thermostat. Not unheared of even though fairly new. Just double check rad fan comes on at about the 220 mark, and not at 260 mark.

Radiator fan for 2001 Jeep Cherokee

Had this problem and one thing that even Chilton manuals only show in fine print sorta say is that Jeep cherokee has a relay sensor for the coolant fan usualy right behind the passenger or driver side headlight you may have to remove the bumper also its rather easy. Its a liitle black box thats screwd down on the panel just unscrew it unplug it replace mine ran me around $60.00.Before I learned about this after replacing the thermostate and just about to rip out the water pump my buddy told me about the sensor after replacing over a year ago no problems.
