Could this problem be in my transmission or transfer case
If the car is still moving forward when you are placing it in gear, there are a few things to check.
look under the vehicle and place the car in stadard 2wd, and try to move the car forward. watch the rear end to see if it buckles, and watch the driveline to see if it is spinning freely or catching up. Check the U-joint for the rear end. See if the SUV is able to be pushed backwards and forwards.
The fact that it will not move in 2wd, but it moves in 4wd, makes me think that you are not having a xfer or transmission issue, but one in the rear end. Spider gears could have failed, or it could be something as simple as a U-joint.
Feel free to send me pics, and let me know how that goes.

The check engine light will represent fault codes that the computer is sensing. Have a mechanic, or go to your local auto parts superstore and have them scan for the fault codes. This will at least give you an idea about some of your problems.

It seems like this 98 is well known for this, i have a 98 as well and never had this problem YET? god i shouldnt have said it. but in my fuse cluster on the side of dash inside behind drivers door is a fuse in the 26 th position (10 A) that says its the electronic shift relay, electronic shift control module, power window relay, interior lamp relay, battery saver relay. CHECK THIS FUSE, also pos 27, ( 15A) it says DLR,back-up lamp switch,DTR sensor, GEM, (generic electronic module) ELECTRIC SHIFT. check this fuse also. Under the hood by the battery there is another fuse box inside there is a "POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE' I dont know what this is but it says what it says, it is located in the # 6 position and is a 10a fuse...." Be careful if you rev the gas as if it does engage you could do damage to drivtrain, also if someone is under,in front of or behind the vehicle and engages " POSSIBLE DEATH or SEVERE INJURIES could occur. Be safe and good luck
