I'm trying to find out how many cooling fan relays are in a 1999 Ford Taurus SE with the 3.0L Vulcan OHV engine. This model year has done away with the CCRM (Constant Control Relay Module), so the relays are replaceable. I have found the low speed relay (number 31 in the Power Distribution Box), but I can't seem to find the High speed fan relay.

    I'm operating under the assumption that there are two, and I believe I found the other. It's in a black box located on the driver's side of the battery. It's the large square relay, but there's no information to identify that. I changed this relay, and my cooling fans started to work in every gear.

    Looks like I finally figured this one out. It seems that it was the high speed cooling fan relay, and the reason that it would operate only in park was because it was sticking and the shifting in the engine compartment from drive to park would make it slip free and make contact. I put the relay from the Driver's Side Window into the first large square relay in a relay box (unlabeled and no information in Haynes' or the Owner's Manual, I have another next to the GEM that I don't know what goes into it, nor do I know the other six that go here) located on the driver's side of the battery. The fans started kicking on in every gear (P, R, N, D, (D), and 1). I let the fans cycle several times (about a 30 second duration when stopped-no matter what gear) and drove to the cigarette store. My girlfriend kept the car drive but kept her foot on the brake while I bought the smokes (the fans cycled a couple times while I was inside) and we drove back home. The coolant didn't overflow, but I think I found a crack in my expansion tank. Could help explain all the steam I've been getting. But anyway, it seems things are working now. I'll be checking the ground wires soon... over 104 degrees here today.

    By the way, do you know the three relays (Relay 4, Relay 3, Relay 2) located in another box of similar deminsions located next to the GEM under the driver's side dash?

Fuse #9 protects the 2 cooling fan relays.

It looks like the hgh speed cooling fan realy is in a thin box mounted sideways between the battery and fender.

It has high speed relay, autolamp relay, autolamp headlamp relay, horn relay, washer motor relay, wiper hi/lo relay, wiper park relay.

Section 03-03: Engine Cooling 1999 Taurus, Sable Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Electrical System NOTE: With A/C ON, the cooling fan motors will run continuously. Cooling fan motors will not cycle ON and OFF with A/C clutch (2884) .

NOTE: An exception to this is when vehicle speed is over 61 km/h (38 mph) and coolant temperature is below 100°C (212°F), and A/C head pressure is below 1.71 MPA (250 psi). The cooling fan motors will then automatically shut off.

The cooling fan motors are mounted within a fan shroud (8146) behind the radiator (8005) .

Engine Cooling Fan Control CCRM Applications The PCM monitors certain parameters (such as engine coolant temperature, vehicle speed, A/C on/off status, A/C pressure, etc) to determine engine cooling fan needs. The PCM controls the fan operation through the Fan Control (FC) output (single speed fan applications) or the Low Fan Control (LFC) and High Fan Control (HFC) outputs as shown in Table 2. Although the fan control (FC), low speed fan control and high speed fan control relays are normally open relays, the FC/LFC circuit is wired through a voltage inverter inside the CCRM. The voltage inverter ensures that the PCM must turn on (ground) the FC/LFC output to turn the fan off. This is done so the cooling fan will operate in the event of an open FC/LFC circuit.

Stand-Alone Fan Control Relay Applications The PCM monitors certain parameters (such as engine coolant temperature, vehicle speed, A/C on/off status, A/C pressure, etc) to determine engine cooling fan needs. The PCM determines engine cooling fan control requirements and controls the fan operation through the Low Fan Control (LFC) and High Fan Control (HFC) outputs (Table 3).

    Again, from the 1998 EVTM, there is a relay center box #1, relay center box #2 and a relay diode center box.



    Box #1 has high speed cooling fan realy, autolamp aprk relay, wiper hi/lo relay, wiper park relay, horn relay, washer motor relay, autolamp/headlamp relay. (I believe this is box by battery & fender)



    Box #2 has all door lock relay, all door unlock relay, liftgate/decklid release relay.



    Relay diode center box has cargo lamp relay and diode center

Where is the lo speed cooling fan located on a 2000 ford taurus 3.0l ohv?

If you have one fan on the vehicle, the fan speed is controlled by a fan module based on temperature or A/C high side pressure. Some vehicles have 2 relays in the relay black box in the engine compartment. You need to call the dealer and give them your vin number and they can tell you what you have narrowing down your search.

I changed my radiator on 99 ford Taurus now my battery goes dead someone said to take the ground cable off and use a test light to check the fuses well I did that and the light came on for every fuse so now I'm back at square one

Radiator cooling fan fuse location for Ford Taurus

The cooling fan on a ford car usually does not have a fuse. The cooling fans are controlled by a relay in the power distribution box inside the engine compartment. The box is usually located near the battery. Your owners manual should have a guide showing you what each relay in the box is for.

Engine Cooling problem 999 Ford Taurus 6 cyl

have u bled the cooling system ?warm the car and cut the car off right before the fans come on ,let sit for 30-35 minutes,see if the coolant drops in res. if so repeat process untill coolant stops droping ,then drive car regularly if overheating stops ,but monitor it because it will drop somemore/there has been reports of new and rebuilt water pumps nt having correct propelar mounted on them/ backwards etc. if this helps let me know [email protected]

Cooling fans only run when gear is in park

Looking at a wiring diagram I see two relay's that control the cooling fans (has two ) High speed cooling fan relay , low speed cooling fan relay . Both relays are controlled by the PCM - engine computer . Your best bet , have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Could have control circuit problems .There are videos on youtube test relay controlled circuits . How to test at the relay base (where relay plugs into ) Test power an grounds an control . Do you know how the cooling fans work ? Coolant temp. sensor inputs temp to PCM . When coolant temp reach's 200 to 220 , the PCM will energize the relay's low speed then high if temp fails to come down . Can check this data on a good scan tool . Can even turn the fans on with a good scan tool .

Slow to rapid coolant rise after engine is shut off

Normal. This is called heat soak. When you stop the engine, its temperature rises since the coolant is no longer being circulated by the water pump through the radiator. The coolant then expands and goes higher in the overflow tank. As the engine cools, it retreats back into the engine. Proper level should be determined only when the engine is cool.
