Car quit, took it to a mechanic who installed new alternator and battery. Alternator charges to over 17 volts, headlights quit working and it seems that the radiator cooling fans don't work either. It will start if we disconnect the battery overnight. I unhooked the battery scratched the lead back across and didn't seem to have a very large spark (under hood light and interior lights came on, interior went off shortly after). Help!!!
Make sure he didn't put the wrong alternator in there. Sounds like it's charging too much, or shorting out somewhere. Take your starter in and have it checked.
The Alt is frying your new battery. 17v is too high Max charging voltage should not be above 14.2v on the high and 13.6v minimum low. Regulator on alt is running wide open and not charging any ampereage. If not corrected, bye- bye battery. Good luck.
You have some type of power drain in the system. You said you headlights are not working?Maybe this relay is bad, causing the power drain or short .
