I am having a problem with my Steptronic transmission in a 1999 BMW Z3 roadster, the warning light on the instrument cluster came on when I started up the car, The transmission worked fine, until the other day the car was parked over night, I was taking out trunk liner to install new cd cable and traced wires. I started car to move it, the transmission warning light came on transmission shifts terribly in auto now I can still put it in manual mode and it will shift ok. I had removed shift indicator last week to check intermittent quadrant light blink un plugged manual/auto selector switch (only manual light has ever been lit while in that mode only lit in auto for 5 minutes one time a year ago) had intermittent warning light after reconnection but warning light went back out when I restarted. Now warning light stays on all the time.. Bad selector switch? Loose connection in trunk? Loose connection in console? I'm not sure where to look.

No, this is a situation that involves one or more of the shift solenoids that are inside the pan. These shift solenoids are malfunctioning at this time and, i recommend inspecting the transmission asap for faulty solenoids.
if it has an orange light with it this could be the engine warning light which means you need to get it looked at by your dealer as it could be a serious engine problem or it could just be a service indicator
