2002 Mazda tribute has a hard shift/shift flare only from 2nd to 3rd gear. Sometimes it will shift fine others times it has the hard shift/flare. I check transmission fluid and it is at at correct level.What could be the cause of this?
Bad sign that, get it checked, do not allow it to slip.

Service trans every 2 years or 24,000 miles.Buy a trans filter kit,remove trans oil pan,replace or clean filter(some tranys has a wire mesh screen in them that is cleaned,not replaced),replace oil pan & refill with recommended amount & proper type of fluid.REMEMBER THIS:CLEANLINESS IS GODLINESS WHEN WORKING ON AUTO TRANS,DON'T LEAVE ANY PIECES OF RAGS OR ANY OTHER MATERIAL INSIDE OF TRANS!!!

you may have worn contacts in the nutral switch assembly, try replacing unit .

The plastic rod ends on the cable assy that goes between the shft lever in the colum and the transmittion are worn. I change the cable for the same reason last week and that fixed the problem.
The cable part number is MZEC01-46-500E the price from the Mazda dealer was US $ 64.98. Is easy to change all you need is aphillips screw driver & pliers
