Sounds like you have a leak and water will cause issues such as this. Have your car checked for leaks.

HI, There is a problem with your tail lamp assemblies. Mercedes has recognized the problem and came out with a safety recall for this situation. Check with your local dealer to see if they are covered under warranty.

SOURCE: engine oil light came on, on my mercedes ML 350, 2006 model.

IT MEANS THAT YOUR OIL LEVEL IS VERY LOW AND NEEDS TO BE FILLED. CHECK THE OIL LEVEL WITH THE DIPSTICK IF EQUIPPED. IF NOT, THEN ADD 1 OR 2 QUARTS OF OIL TO SEE IF THE OIL LIGHT GOES OFF. IT MAY TAKE SYNTHETIC OIL SO DON'T PUT CONVENTIONAL OIL IN IT IF YOU SEE A MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC OIL RECOMMENDATION STICKER UNDER THE HOOD. IF YOU ARE UNSURE THEN BRING IT TO A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN A.S.A.P.. HOPE THIS HELPS. GOOD LUCK.

SOURCE: how do i open the hood inside of a mercedes benz

if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't open it. there is nothing under there that you should touch. but anyway, its the red lever just to the right of the emergency brake pedal on the underside of the dash. there is a secondary lock on the hood itself just above that great big three pointed thing on the grille thing between the front bright light things. works like the open the trunk thing on the back between the red light thingys. be careful not to close the hood with your hands or head in there.

Rick,
The brake lamps on your Mercedes are computer-controlled. I would recommend scanning your computer network for possible fault codes.

Malfunctioned; unplugged, plugged back in, seems OK. Yes?

In my professional opinion, you have separate problems (if your description is accurate and haven't left anything out). # 1, the high mounted brake lamp is not part of the multi-function switch circuit (it's separate) - ONLY BRAKE LIGHTS.
#2 the other problem could very well be the multi-function switch because it controls the tail lamp relay in the Engine Compartment Junction box (under hood electrical box). When the parking lights are turned on, that high mounted 3rd brake lamp is NOT supposed to come on. It should only come on when the brake pedal is depressed. My professional experience/opinion, you either have the wrong bulb (single filament) in one of the brake lamp sockets in the rear of the vehicle, or one of those dual-filament brake lamp bulbs is shorted internally. You can verify this by pressing the brake pedal and see if the dash/cluster lights come on.
