SOURCE: guages and windows going crazy
There is a one-wire communications bus system in these cars, called by Chrysler the "PCI" bus. The symptoms described strongly suggest a failure of bus communication. Depedning upon whichpost one reads, it appears either to be a partial or imtermittent failure or a total failure. For example, the information for the guage readings on the instrument panel comes from PCM (Powertrain Contol Module) transmissions sent over the PCI bus. No info, no guage readings. The problem is that, as far as is presently known, there does not exist any 3d party (aftermarket) equipment to communicate over the bus, and, according to a jeep tech interviewed today, one will not get any good hints from anything that appears at the OBDII connector (which can be read by any of various generic scan tools.) There is a proprietary Chrysler device called a DRB-III (that is now sold at some automotive outlets for a little over three thousand dollars for the unit) that will communicate with PCI devices about what they are hearing and saying over the PCI bus.
So... you can test, so of, an instrument panel, by holding in the odometer reset button while turning the key on. The guages will sweep, all the lights will come on, the segments will illuminate in sequence if the instrument panel is good.
Beyond which, you need to get the car to a DRB-III scanner, see which module (about eight choices -- door modules, a radio connection, etc.) is messing up communication on the PCI bus.

You likely have it repaired by now but it sounds like a classic case of oxidized battery or cable connection (sometimes mis-diagnosed as bad battery but cured with new (clean) battery)
SOURCE: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee alarm keeps randomly going off.
this happened to me recently with my 96 grand cherokee. the battery got drained by the alarm going off randomly at night. i pulled the fuse for the horn so at least my neighbors would only be bothered by flashing lights. then i couldn't jump the car because the alarm was still going off. i hooked my car to jump it to another car, and then i had to deactivate the alarm first by putting my key in the driver side door and unlocking the car. then i left it hooked to another car and still getting power but didn't jump it for at least 5 minutes in case the computer needed to reset. then it jumped fine. from what i've read online, this is a common problem that can be avoided if you stop using the power locks and always manually lock and unlock the doors with your key. its a little annoying, but apparently the power locks are connected to the alarm issue. hope the same works for you.
