grinding along the track could mean that one of the cables are worn out. Not sure if it is a replacement part, but you can find out at a Mercedes Parts dealer.
to remove the sunroof, you will need to remove all the pillar panels in the interior (A, B and C pillars), after that you need to remove the roof panel in the interior. once you have done that you will have access to the sunroof.

You have to remove the overhead control unit (front dome lamp assembly) to gain access to the sunroof motor(link below) You can then put an allen wrench/socket into the drive motor for the sunroof and turn to close. This works if the sunroof motor has failed. If the problem is the switch, you might get lucky by pointing the key at the IR pickup on the driver's door handle and holding the lock button. my truck on my s500 2000 model will not open at all, not will the key and not on the door the key doing everything it suppose to do with the windows and the sunroof, bnut them truck will not pop up could it be a fuse or is the the lock is stuck

Under the front of the car on the engine compartment should be nuts that you can remove to remove the cover.

In the trunk on the left side is access to the sunroof motor where you can manually close the roof.

I believe it is a 17mm nut. Also I think that the tire lug nut removal tool will fit.

Try it both ways and check , but do not apply too much pressure

Only radio and some trouble codes can be cleared.If you have no warning lamps illuminated (such as MIL)
you can remove and charge the battery.

Battery base has a device that clamps the battery on a step/notch on the side. Use a ratchet with an extension to loosen. Once it is loose you can remove the battery.
