To program new keys to work with the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) on a 1997 Ford Expedition, you will need to have two working programmed keys available. If you do not have any working keys, you will need to have the PATS module reprogrammed by a Ford dealership or a locksmith that specializes in Ford vehicles.
Once you have two working keys, here are the steps to program new keys to the PATS system:
- Insert the first working key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position (do not start the engine).
- Within 5 seconds, insert the second working key and turn it to the "On" position.
- Within 10 seconds of inserting the second key, turn both keys to the "Off" position.
- Remove both keys from the ignition.
- Insert the new key you want to program into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position.
- Within 10 seconds, turn the key to the "Off" position and remove it from the ignition.
- Repeat steps 5 and 6 for any additional new keys you want to program.
The PATS system should now recognize the new key and it should be able to start the engine. If the new key does not work, please consult with an Ford Dealer or Automotive Locksmith to assist you with the programming.
