Crank sensor is your likely problem...I had the same problem with my 2003 e46

Good luck with it!

Cheers

The engine light comes on when I start my bmw 318i

Hi Graham,

This means that your engines computer detects that your engine is not running as efficiently as it should. You should get your cars computer scanned and check the codes. It will give you a starting point to determine whats wrong with you car.

Hope this helps and good luck!

BMW 318i starts fine but once you drive it for 5 minutes switch it off, it wont start again.

sounds like a engine sensor i'd guess at the crank sensor but to be sure you would need to get the OBD codes read , this will give the exact fault so wont waste money trying sensor(s) on a hit an miss basis, you can buy a code reader online not expensive just make sure it covers your vehicle make then you have a valuable diag equipment for future use

MY 2000 BMW 318I SE IS NOT ACCELERATING PROPERLY WHEN STARTING FROM COLD I PUT MY FOOT DOWN BUT THE CAR JUST JUDDERS ALONG IF I STOP AND REV THE ENGINE PAST 5000 IT THEN SEEMS OK AFTER ALSO THE EMISSION...

There isn't a car out there that likes to be put in drive as soon as it is started. Mine especialy. I give it at least 30 seconds to warm while I am adjusting evrything and away I go. Runs like a champ. Let it warm up for a couple of minutes from a cold start.

Bmw 318i

You need to make sure you have a good drive belt and verify that the tension is working,if all seems normal then get the alternator or the wiring to it tested.
