Most of these lift struts can be removed by propping up the gate and prying off the strut ends from their balljoint ends. Some struts have a broad metal band that acts as a spring or retainer and you may have to slide that band off and then pop the old strut off.
To put the new one on, just center the socket over the strut and press it on or tap it with a small hammer. Make sure you put it on with the strut body either up or down the same way as the one you took off. Normally the body goes to the car and the shaft to the tailgate/hatch/trunk.
