I'm embarrassed to Ask this... Where do you add/check the transmission fluid on a 96 Toyota Corolla 5 speed transmission? I cannot find a transmission fluid dipstick

look in your owners manual under fluid capacities. The torque converted holds some too, which you can't drain. Try to get close to full, then slowly add fluid until it comes up to the mark on the dipstick. Don't start the vehicle to check until it is close to full.
Open the hood up. You will find two different types of sticks, one near the alternator to the belts side, which is yellow or white colored and one on the battery side. It is orange colored, round small cup like dip stick, secured with a safety lock on it. Press the lock a side with your thump and take the stick out. When you push the stick inside it will sit in place firmly with a click sound.

If you have a standard you need to get to the check plug under the vehicle. You check that level by removing the plug and sticking your finger in the hole. The fluid should be to up to the bottom of the check hole. there is a transmission dipstick between the airfilter and the radiator. the handle will be balck or orange. if you still have trouble finding it look about 5 inches to the right of where the engine and transmission meet in the middle up by the radiator. you can put transmission fluid in there.

It depends on if have you have a 3 speed automatic, 4 speed automatic, or a manual transmission.
The 4 speed and manual tranny share their fluid with the differential so if you fill the tranny you fill the differential at the same time.
The 3 speed differential does not share its fluid with the tranny. To fill or check the fluid on the 3 speed automatic you will need to get underneath the car. The fill bolt faces the firewall side of the transmission. It is about 4 inches above the differential drain plug. You will need a fluid pump and hose to get the fluid into the fill hole. The fluid you will need is Dexron tranny fluid.
The jerking and shuddering at 45-50 mph seems like it could be a transmission/torque converter problem. Check your transmission fluid. Make sure it is at the right level, and that it is not dark or burnt. It should be a bright red or pink.
