When i turn on the headlights the dash lights do not turn on. The tail do not turn either but seem to come on when you put the car in drive with the head lights on.

SOURCE: No tail, running lights.

The socket for the headlite switch is bad or burned or deterioted due to heat. What happens that there is no good contact. You will have to replace the socket. The socket may not be available from the dealer. What you can do, just like what I did, check your socket design, go to a ford dealer and they have a book with all socket designs and identify the one you have. Get the manufacturer name and part number. With this information, go to Kragen and they will be able to order the socket for you. You will then have to cut the wires and attach the new socket.

SOURCE: dash lights do not turn on when turning on head lights

This is probably a blown fuse. Consult your owners manual for fuse locations. On todays cars, there is often an under the hood fuse location for engine controls and another location inside the passenger compartment for things like dashboards and tail lights. The light that comes on when you put it in drive is probably the brake light. It goes on when you step on the brake and shift into drive.

Check the tail light bulbs, check to make sure the dash lighting switch is turned up but not turned so far up that the interior lights come on when the door is closed.

Tracing down a short causing my dash lights and my tail lights to not work after a near lightning strike ?

The running lights and dash lights are on the same circuit. The brake lights and turn signals are on their own circuit. You need to use a 12v test light to see where the circuit is broken, starting at the fuse, then the headlight switch, then the dash harness.(If the headlights work, you at least know the headlight switch is getting power).

Dash and tail lights stopped working on my daughters 1991 toyota celica gt. the fuse has been checked and replaced. it was ok. the headlights were recently changed. is it true the dash and tail lights run...

If the tail lights and the dash lights stopped working and the tail light and the panel lighting fuses are both o.k. and you can find no other blown fuses then the problem is most likely the headlight switch.

What started this mess? tailights, fog lights, brake lights....

The relay has nothing to do with the tail lights, but replacing the switch sounds like a good idea. There's a nut holding it in place, see http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/electrics/switches/switch-headlight/1027524/ to get an idea of the construction. And the price. This is not worth fiddling about unreliable workarounds...
In addition, if fuses 15 and/or 16 burn frequently there might be a problem with the tail light cabling.

Good luck

Tail lights and dash lights not working, due to headlight install

I have the same problem in an 88 Accord. I found that if I slowly turn the light switch, there is a sweet spot in between the the parking light and headlight on position (around halfway in between or so.) where all will work. The problem is , when I might a right turn signal, it turns the dash and brake lights out again and I have to refind that sweet spot. Not very safe, so we don't drive that car at night.
I was told by a mechanic that the issue is a relay or switching mechanism located in the steering column.
