Why would my 1995 Chevy S10 Temp Gauge moves to hot, warning lights come on and poof....all is back to normal?

1995 Chevy S 10, 71K miles, check gauges light comes on (apx 40-50 mph)followed by temp gauge moving to hot followed by lights coming on for brake and ABS, sometimes battery light will come on. Then as quick as it started temp gauge goes down and lights go off. Why or what is going on?

SOURCE: Describe your 2002 Astro van temperature gauge

Check coolant level, and possibly replace thermostat. When a thermostat gets stuck in the closed position, coolant does not circulate thru motor. Gauge stays midrange when driving, because motor is being cooled by air and or the fan. If car seems to operate completely normal, then the gauge is faulty.
