Have alternator output and battery condition tested or test yourself with a digital meter. The battery should have at least 12.5 volts without vehicle running and around 13.5 to 14.5 volts with engine idling.

Most times engine surging is caused by a manifold vaccuum leak. Lightly spray some carburetor cleaner around the intake manifold and vaccuum lines to check for a leak.

Not sure I follow your problem.
The alternator puts out 13-14 volts at idle but very few amps. If you turn on the headlights at idle the voltage may drop to 12 until you raise engine speed. The amperage goes up with engine speed.
Is the battery voltage at least 14 when the engine speed is 1500RPM or more ?

go have the code read most auto shops offer service for free the code is starting point for repair

Check for loose cables to spark plugs or damaged spark plug cables.

You need to have the codes read to see what caused it, Autozone will read the codes for free.

Consider trying with another battery. Possibly the battery is dying bcos the alternator is not charging up to rating.

Just a idea. If the car is running at idle and the oil light blinks , it usually from low oil pressure. At a idle your seeing the light respond to the revolutions of the engine. ! thing to try is to replace the oil pressure switch on the engine block. And #2, Most causes in a VW is that the vehicle overheated at one time and weekend the oil pump,or massive amount of miles.
