Which engine? see list , mind blowing, and what country>???
doing a 60k mile tuneup works, at least once a decade.
ever do the list of parts, spark and fuel , per operators guide?
that be first, 99% of bad running engines are that.
my guess , (weak based on only 1 fact) is has lost fueling
the ECU in the all cars 96 tries 10x to stop stalls.
the reasons are this: (top list)
1: lost 12vdc power ,see dash lamps or other lights go dead at stall>?
2: lost spark (tune up time?)
3: lost fueling, (try test fuel start now.
4: flooded, are the spark tips soaked in raw gasoline. (use wide open throttle cranking, does that work? this cuts fuel. (a secret mode)
5: ISC dead? (start car with 10% throttle) ok ISC is funky. clean it.

can you save the stall with fast right foot? (key fact here)

gen 3 engine list.
1.4 I4 40/44 kW (ABD/AEX/APQ)
1.6 I4 55 kW (ABU/AEA/AEE)
1.6 I4 74 kW (AEK/AFT/AKS)
1.8 I4 55 kW (AAM/ANN)
1.8 I4 66 kW (ABS/ADZ/ACC/ANP)
2.0 I4 85 kW (2E/ADY/AGG/AKR/ABA/AWG/AWF)
2.0 I4 16v 110 kW (ABF)
2.8 VR6 128 kW (AAA)
2.9 VR6 140 kW (ABV)
1.9 I4 D 47 kW (1Y)
1.9 I4 SDI 47 kW (AEY)
1.9 I4 TD 55 kW (AAZ)

SOURCE: car won"t start. starter turns. Happened once before. started after 30-45min.

I would start by banging the bottom of the gas tank while you are cranking it over. If this causes it to start, replace the fuel pump. If it still doesn't start, there is a valve on the fuel rail on the top of the engine (you may have to remove plastic cover). Remove the plastic cap on the valve, and while you have someone cycle the ignition to the run position from the off position, depress the center tab on the valve and see if gas comes out. If it doesn't, replace the fuel pump. If it does, let me know and I will help you further. (note: replace fuel filer at same time.)

SOURCE: 88 pontiac 6000 shudders and stalls after approx. 30 min. driving

What was replaced in the tune up? Usually the coil paks cause these types of issues. Also fuel filter or fuel pump will allow enough fuel to start and sputter like you describe.

SOURCE: i have a vw golf gti. P reg 1996. recently it has

Hi Frank
If as you say....Nothing is happening at all when you turn the key, you appear to have one of two problems. A faulty starter motor--or--- A faulty ignition switch. If you can tap the starter motor while another person keeps the key turned to the start position, and the engine now starts you now know it is a starter problem. When doing this PLEASE MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF GEAR.
If it should start up, or even engage the starter motor while IN GEAR, serious injuries could happen, and I do not mean to your car.
Good luck
John

SOURCE: golf gti 2.0 8v keeps cutting out now it wont start

Just found your problem while looking for solutions to my own. My 2.0 8v 3door 97 golf gti can also cut out after driving for two or three minutes. Works fine one day then dies instantly 5 times the next...not a safe thing to happen pulling out of a junction!! Have researched problem and been told that it's probably fixable for £12-15. The "Hall Sender Relay" which is the fancy name for the ecu's power supply relay can go on the blink and cut power at any time causing instant shutdown...just like turning off the ignition key. Part number is 165906381 and available from a local vw dealer usually overnight. I'm fitting mine tomorrow 4/4/09...fingers crossed! Hope this helps others...worth a try for the cost involved.

SOURCE: 1997 honda accord no spark, motor turns over

Could be the ignition coil or ignition module. Also check the ignition fuse.

First one minut engine running rough

could be many problems. Do u have a check engine light on in the dash? May also want to check spark plug wires, cap and rotor. Spray them with water while the motor is running, if it acts funny, bad wires or cap/rotor.

I need to know which engine is in ur golf ex: 1.8l 2.0l
