The canister is located in a frame behind the left rear wheel, and you will need wrenches, a socket set, and a jack to raise the back of the truck. Carefully remove the hoses from the canister - if you damage the quick connects, you will have a big problem. Then remove the canister frame by removing the bolts holding it (remove the screws holding the left rear plastic wheel well to get access to the front of the canister frame). Remove the old canister from the frame, attach the new canister, and then reinstall the frame.
If you are having a problem with the EVAP system, you should also check the hoses and replace the EVAP purge valve and the EVAP solenoid valve ( typical failure points on these vehicles - if you have a problem with one component, the rest will follow shortly after). The purge valve is located on the bottom of the vehicle near the center of the rear axle (just follow the small purge hose attached to the canister). The vent valve is located on the top right side on the engine. All parts are available from Amazon or a GM dealer.
A code P0446 could mean one or more of the following has happened: - Faulty vent valve - Open, short or excessive resistance on Vent valve control circuit - Blockage of vent valve - Bad PCM
With a P0446 OBD-II trouble code, here are some things to try: - Replace Vent valve - Repair open, short, or resistance problem in control circuit - Repair open, or short, or resistance problem in power circuit
The solenoid for the purge vent valve is located near the vapor recovery carbon canister, a diagram of the location of the carbon canister is located under the hood on the emission sticker.
The canister purge solenoid is bolted to the intake manifold. The canister vent solenoid valve is attached to a bracket under the vehicle near the spare tire.
97 Dodges have a known issue of the EVAP canister failing. The carbon granules end up clogging the vacuum lines all the way up the purge valve. Inspect the vacuum lines at the purge valve, if carbon granules are seen, then the evap canister must be replaced. Then the vacuum lines will need to be blown clean/clear with compressed air. Also then, the purge valve must be replaced or at least disassembled and clean the valve seats under the diaphragm. The top of the valve can be removed to do this. The Evap canister on these model years is mounted horizontally on the frame rail, driver's side rear of the driver's seated position. I have first hand experience with this failure with a 97 Dodge Ram 4x4 5.9L.
