Ensure number one cylinder is at the top of the compression stroke and check which distributor cap segment the rotor arm is pointing to. This will be number one and the firing order will progress around the cap. I seem to remember the direction of rotation is anticlockwise.
Backfire when trying to start a motor is associated with rich running, (too much fuel or unburnt fuel), retarded timing, carbon arcs in the distributor cap, intermittent dirty points, spark plug wires out of order and jumped or skipped timing chains.
It just has the little 4 fuses box with a black plastic cover on the passengers engine compartment by the prop rod hole. A few wire connections in the right side engine compartment (apron) also hold a couple fuses in plastic tubes.
About .006 for exhaust and 8 thousands for intake. Each car is different depending on cam wear. I use a long extension from the tappet to my ear to listen for tap at 2500 rpm.
