Liftgate actuator is not engaging on BMW x5

When i use the button on the inside, button on the lift gate, or the key button it clicks to unlock but the actuator does not make any noise. I can manually lift the gate and it stays up on its own but it will not open on its own.

right i had this ***** of a problem 2nd week in jan 2010. a bmw mechanic told to jack car up at front and hook a jumper pack up to live on starter motor terminal and then earth, was quite hard to put croc clip on to starter but did manage it. this was supposed to back charge to battery to get enough power to open car with remote, in theory it should of worked but i gave up after 3 hours-no power. so i got my key put it in drivers door and mechanically turned to open position, then i got a cutlery knife from kitchen and wrapped some insulation tape around tip up 2-3 inches. then i pushed this down glass directly above door handle key end to pry a gap between glass and rubber just enough to slide coat hanger wire in with small hook on end then i manouvered wire hook until i hooked latch arm which i did within 1 minute pulled coathanger wire up and pulled door handle the door opened much to my delight. this was a major sigh of relief after trying for 2 days to get in, and many hours searching the net for a solution which i couldnt find. THIS WORKS 100 percent WITH ABSOLUTELY NO DAMAGE!!!!!!! any questions email me- [email protected]

Check fuses again this time with a test light, both sides of fuse should light with key turned to on check all fuses not just the one.make sure you check fuses under hood if applicable and in passenger compartment. If you have never used keys in locks they may need to be lubercated.

Check the battery, or you can reprogram the key yourself.

1. turn the key to on position in car and turn off within 5 sec.
2. hold the arm button (the big one in the center)
3. Press the unlock button three (3) times
4. release the arm button
5. turn key to on position and off within 5 sec.

Need to replace the liftgate switch, where can I get instructions to do that?

How do you know it need's a switch ?
Rear Hatch/Gate Description and Operation
The lift gate can be opened by operating the switch on the instrument panel. Battery voltage is supplied to the lift gate actuator through the body control module (BCM). The BCM will pulse the lift gate actuator when a release input is received through the key fob, or the instrument panel switch. Did you test voltages ? Check for BCM DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ?
Circuit/System Description
The lift gate switch is an input to the body control module (BCM). The BCM supplies battery voltage to the signal circuit and when the lift gate switch is activated the signal circuit voltage goes low. The BCM controls the lift gate release actuator assembly through the LIFTGATE relay. When the lift gate switch signal is activated, the BCM enables the LIFTGATE relay by applying battery voltage to the lift gate relay circuit and the relay is energized when the BCM grounds the LIFTGATE relay control circuit. When the relay is energized battery voltage is supplied to the lift gate release actuator assembly through the lift gate release actuator control circuit.

I have 2005 chevy tahoe my doors all licks but my liftgate door with window stays open use to lock w all my doors? I havent check anytjing yet? I cant lock it.

Here is how it works !
Liftgate Locking Operation
The lift gate will lock any time the vehicle is shifted out of park on vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission and at vehicle speeds exceeding 5 kph with manual transmission. This happens in conjunction with auto door locks if enabled or independently of auto door locks if the feature is disabled. This ensures that the lift gate is locked anytime the vehicle is shifted out of park or when the vehicle is in motion.
The lift gate lock relay supply and coil sides receive a constant voltage through the battery voltage supply circuit and the ECC fuse. The normally closed contact is connected to ground and the control side is connected to the body control module (BCM). A lock function will occur when a door lock switch activation, keyless entry lock transmission, auto door lock function or a lift gate lock function has been received by the BCM. The BCM will then ground the control side of the lift gate lock relay. This energizes the relay and allows voltage to be applied to the lift gate lock actuator lock control circuit. Since the other side of the lift gate lock actuator is connected to the normally closed contacts of the door unlock relay to ground, the lift gate will lock. When an unlock function occurs the BCM will ground the control side of the unlock relay and the rear doors and lift gate will unlock.
The BCM also runs diagnostics on the lift gate lock relay control circuit and will set DTC B3825 as current and also send a Class 2 message to the DIC. The DIC will display REPLACE LIFTGATE FUSE to inform the driver that a fault has been detected in the lift gate lock circuit and that the lift gate is not locked. Faults that will set the DTC and cause the DIC to display the message could be any of the following:
?€¢
An open ECC fuse

?€¢
An open or short to ground in the lift gate lock relay battery positive voltage circuit

?€¢
A faulty lift gate lock relay

?€¢
An open or short to ground in the lift gate lock relay control circuit

?€¢
A short to ground in the lift gate lock actuator lock control circuit

?€¢
A faulty BCM

Neither the key fob or unlock button on d/s door will unlock the lift gate (2003), what should be looked at?

{: ) You didn't mention what vehicle you have, but anyway, for 2003 models, it is most likely a faulty liftgate actuator.

The rear lift gate on my 2006 Lincoln Navigator will not open automatically or manually and there appears to be no way to access anything inside the door from inside or out.

POWER LIFT-GATE OPERATION - To open the optional power liftgate, push the button on the instrument panel , press on your five-button key fob (if equipped), or press and release the control located in the left rear quarter panel (Figure B). To unlatch the liftgate glass, push the button ) under the center of the license plate lamp shield, or press on your five-button key fob. Do not open the liftgate or the liftgate glass in a garage or other enclosed area with a low ceiling. Keep clear of the liftgate when operating the rear switch. To open the liftgate manually, pull the handle located on the liftgate to release the liftgate from the vehicle. The power system will take over when you release the handle. To close, make certain the rear window is closed, and then pull down the liftgate a few inches to activate power closing. Closing the gate rapidly or more than a few inches may activate the obstacle detection feature and stop the power system.------------ Also click this link for more help:--- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/05/power-liftgate-on-will-not-open-on.html ------------ This should help.Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

Rear liftgate on wagon will not open with remote or dash release. Can't find a fuse that is for the liftgate. Will open with key.

Hi,

This model actually had a recall on the lift gate actuators as they did give problems. The best why to see if it is the actuator or the wiring is to check for power to the lift gate actuator which is in the liftgate, and try to use the remote etc to see if there is power to it.

If there is power to the actuator then you will need to replace the actuator.

Thanks

Liftgate and glass doesn't open

you have to get in behind tailgate interior trim and pull handle lever as this has come off from the actuator, once tailgate is opened remove panel and relocate actuator bar and you might want to cable tie bar in place for the future
