Hi,
This indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit. Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don't just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.

With a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

  • Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
  • Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
  • Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
  • Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
  • Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
  • Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
  • Diagnose/replace the PCM as required
Thanks.

A po340 is the CPS (camshaft position sensor) which is a real pain to diagnose unfortunately.

causes can be

  • a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
  • the camshaft position sensor may have failed
  • the PCM may have failed
  • there exists an open circuit
  • the crankshaft position sensor may have failed

04 dodge neon showing P0325 and P0340 codes at same time.

Code 0325 is for a Knock sensor. Code 0340 is for the Cam sensor #1 if this is an engine with 2 heads and it is an indication of a single sensor on single head engines.

So if you do have a multiple hed engine, you may have removed the good sensor and left the bad sensor in the other head.

Remember to wipe the computer memory after installing new parts.

Po340 code on my 99 neon. I have no clue what a crankshaft sensor is or does....is this an expensive fix? it has 135000miles on it.

Crankshaft sensors tell the computer which cylinder is on top dead center so the computer knows which cylinder gets the spark and the fuel when working with the camshaft sensor as well. Neon crank sensors are on the back side of the engine or firewall side. Due to a lack of moving air over the sensor, the wiring can become brittle and break. The sensors have also been upgraded to a new connector and pigtail wiring end. Expensive? can be if a new sensor and wiring is needed. Recommend taking it to a shop to get you going again.

Cam Shaft Sensor Problems

Had the same problem before on my 04 Neon SXT...camshaft sensor is on left side of engine block, take out the battery and to the left of it (face car) is the camshaft position sensor. To change it you'll have to move a few hoses but its plan to see there on the left side of the engine...pretty easy remove and replace. Fixed my problem of car not going above 2k RPM when i replaced the sensor.
