1997 jeep wrangler wont start runs rough sometimes

  • wrang97 Jun 12, 2015

had similar problem due to bad exhaust manifold oxygen sensor (replaced), and battery kept sliding into computer wiring harness disrupting signals to computer. placed 1" spacer on rear battery clamp to push battery forward away from computer.

3 problems I tracked down were: (1) mechanic was removing wiring from automatic shutdown relay (ASD) within fuse box in engine compartment (jeep wouldn't start); (2) bucking and backfiring after 20 min cool down was due to bad front oxygen sensor; and (3) battery was sliding into computer wiring harness disrupting sensor input/output signals, I placed a 1" spacer on back battery clamp to push battery forward and problem solved.

Check the gas, could be water in it or drive the car with a fuel pressure tester connected to it and watch to see if you lose pressure.
Normal pressure while driving is about 30 to 40 psi

Clock spring mech is prob bad, first easy check is remove airbag 2 8mm bolt from back side of wheel make sure wires are still connected if they are good the clock spring mech is bad you can use a steering wheel puller to remove wheel and clock spring mech just snaps out and has 2 plugs on it, I have 2 if you need one.

SOURCE: Jeep wrangler Fuse box

You have two locations for the fuse box. One is either under the hood or behind the glove box. I would pull apart the glove box and take a look.

1997 jeep wrangler wont start Fuel and volt gauges stay in the off position with the key on and I get no spark to the plugs.

I would suspect the ignition switch (electrical) is the problem due to the age of your Jeep. Sometimes when you turn the ignition key if it's really bad, you will feel a bit of roughness indicating the switch is breaking apart inside.

Turn the key from off to on repeatedly and see if you notice if the fuel & volt gauges work each time.

If you find it's not the switch, you'll need to check your wiring ground locations to make sure they are not rusted and are making good electrical contact. Specifically, a ground wire to the dash panel.

If all grounds are in excellent condition then you may need to trace the wiring from the battery to the ign. switch to the gauges to see if you can find any damaged loose or pinched wiring. A good 12 volt test light should help you to isolate and find this issue, start at the battery and work your way through:)

FLEX your wiring a bit and make sure it's still flexible. Sometimes your wiring can become so corroded over time that current barely makes it to the destination.

Good luck.

1988 wrangler startup squeel and rough start

Sounds like you have a loose fan belt. May or not be related to the rough start though. Tighten (and, ideally replace) the fan belt.

I've owned two 1997 Jeep Wranglers and eventually they both shared a common problem of rough idle, low fuel mileage, check engine light and and rough acceleration. Sometimes it would run fine but sometimes...

Hi,
This is a broad spectrum of possibilities. I would first start with a simple approach of insuring good gas.
When these symptoms occur, get a bottle of fuel additive and add to your tank. Possibly you have some condensation issues. This could be just the ticket... I hope so. Good luck.

1997 Jeep Wrangler oil pressure gauge not working

The gage is working because it is coming on sometimes. The oil pressure sending unit on the engine is starting to go. I would replace the oil pressure switch on the engine first.
