SOURCE: Security light flashing and car won't start now

does it start at all, or does it run for about 1 second and shut off? if the latter, then it's the passlock system, and he could have a defective key or security module. the keys have a predetermined resistance value which activates the passlock system to prevent hotwiring. If it is the passlock system, then sometimes you have to wait 15-20 mins for it to reset before starting the engine.

SOURCE: When I start my 2001 alero the anti-lock, traction

the anti-lock and traction lights will come on together if there is a common problem with the two, since they are closely related. may be a wheel speed sensor or something similar. the service engine soon light indicates a problem with the engine computer, can be anything from an emission system problem or an engine performance problem. all of these lights can come on with no apparent running problems on the car. the service vehicle soon light is basically a maintenance reminder, an oil change light. take the car into a shop and have the codes read for these lights.

Vehicles equipped with the PASS-KEY or VATS anti-theft system usually require the system be reset whenever the battery is drained or replaced. Follow this procedure.
Step 1 - Attempt to start the vehicle. It will crank, but not run. The security light will be flashing on and off. Leave the key in the run/on position for exactly 10 minutes, then the security light will stay solid or go off.
Step 2 - Turn the key to the 'off' position for 10 seconds. Attempt to start the vehicle. Some vehicles will run at this point, although many will require you repeat repeat Step 1 two more times. Make sure turn the key to the 'off' position for 10 seconds before each 10 minute cycle.
Step 3 - The vehicle is now ready to relearn the proper code. Turn the key 'off' for 10 seconds and then 'crank' the vehicle. It should be running now. The security light might stay on solid for several minutes afterwards, depending on your system.

How to program my key to 98 ford explorer

for Ford keys (1996 -early 1998 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)

If you want to initiate a new master key....

1. Insert new key into ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen minutes.

2. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder OFF and then back to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.

3. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back ON (RUN) position. The dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.

4. After the security light stops flashing the third time, the new key has been programmed into the vehicles computer and will operate the car. It has replaced ALL the previous electronic key codes and is the ONLY key programmed into the vehicles computer.
If you want to add a key....

1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.

2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.

3. Remove the existing key and, within 15 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to ON (RUN).

4. The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate success in programming the key into the vehicle.

5. Don't attempt to start the vehicle with any key for at least 1 minute.
<HR>On-Board Programming Method "C"

for Ford keys (Later 1998-newer Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)

If you want to initiate a new master key....

1. This requires that the vehicle be connected to special dealer equipment. There are two ten minute delays involved while this device erases all existing key programming and sets up the vehicle computer to accept new key codes. Two new keys should be ready because the system requires a minimum of two keys in the program. After the first two keys are programmed, additional keys can be entered individually by following the instructions for adding duplicate keys (below).

If you want to add a key....

**You must have two original keys to perform this procedure. If you only have one key, you WILL have to take it to the dealer to get it programmed**

1. Insert and existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.

2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (RUN) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay on for at least ONE SECOND.

3. Remove the existing key and, within TEN seconds, insert a second working key and turn it to ON (RUN) and the back OFF. Ignition must be in ON for at least ONE second, but no more than TEN seconds. Remove the key.

4. Insert the new key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it the ON position for at least ONE secondand turn back to OFF.

5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.

6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5
As a precautionary measure for all of the above procedures, you should wait at least one minute after you have performed this until you start your vehicle.

Why the inspection is needed for purchasing a certified pre-owned car?

It is not a compelsion that a buyer should do the inspection for a certified pre-owned car as the dealer has already processed all the certification prior selling it. If any buyer wants to do the inspection then he/she can do it fir their own satisfaction. If anything serious happens with the car then its the responsibiity of the dealer to check it and reolve it quickly.

Why does the paint keep peeling on hatch

Automotive painting is a science. Vehicle owners have taken automakers to small claims court and district court on both new and pre-owned vehicles. They have won thousands of dollars by requesting the paint durability data from the factory to determine if it is defective or not. Request from the Dealer both the paint thickness and paint preparation data from the automaker. Two of these vehicles were 10 years old.

Security light stays on

Has it been on since you've owned the vehicle? Or is this something new? If it has been on since you've owned the vehicle, my guess is that the antitheft security system has somehow been bypassed in a cheap or makeshift way. This may be fine for a while, but it is hard to tell because i am not familiar with a bypass method that leaves the light on.

If this is something that just started recently, i'd say that the TDM (Theft Deterrent Module) is begining to fail. Your car has a "starter immobilizer". This means that when that light is on, it will run just fine, but if the car were to be in the off position, it most likely won't start back up as long long as that light is on. If you notice the security light coming on and then off ten minutes later while driving, then id say your system is failing. Here is a link that describes this problem and solutions for if it fails on you.

Should I use 95 or 98 octain for my new GTI? Regards Gelfand

95 is recomended for all modern vehicles only use 98 for older vehicles that were designed for four star leaded fuel like any pre 92 vehicle in europe .You will not get any increase in performance from using this fuel as the flame rate across the piston is the same with all fuels its only the anti knock additive that denotes the fuel octane rating .Older cars had a lot higher compression ratio which required this higher rating ,like a MKII jag needs 5 star owing to high compression engine combined with the egg shaped piston to give it swirl which increases the efficiency

The dealership should be able to do this for you without a current key, of course this means towing the vehicle to them. See if they will sell you a key and you program it yourself.

hope this helps. I found the above info at FordF150.net
