Hi. I have a Lexus IS 250 - 2006 model. Vehicle won't start when you depress the engine start button. Had it diagnosis done and found out that the engine control unit is exceptionally hot and draining out all the battery power. The mechanic reckons that we must replace the ECU together with the inside cluster, new keys, immobiliser and other control units in order to get the vehicle to start? Can i not only replace the ECU only? What are my options? Can the ECU be recoded to my cars spec? Kindly advise! What other options do i have? This is going to cost me an arm and a leg!

SOURCE: Check engine light is on

no such thing as a catalytic computer... there is a catalytic converter ... part of the exhaust system so they may now be "guessing" that it's an O2 sensor. take the car to autozone... they will scan the codes for free.... post the codes here tho the lads and lasses there are pretty clever and will probably tell you what the codes mean.

SOURCE: The fuse box layout for a Lexus RX 350, 2007 model

THERE ARE TWO FUSE BOXES ON THE CAR ONE UNDER THE DASH AND ONE UNDER THE HOOD. SHOULD BE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT WITH A COVER HELD ON WITH SCREWS OR LATCHES. ON THE INSIDE OF THE LID ON BOTH BOXES THERE SHOULD BE DIAGRAM OF LOCATIONS FOR THE FUSES

Testimonial: "Did not know about the one under the dash, is there a better explanation of what fuse or relay is for which? A pdf diagram maybe?"

Sometimes you can find a used ECU at a wrecking yard. If they have the ECU, they probably have everything you need. Not sure why you would need a new immobilizer or cluster. I would try just swapping out the ECU. The guys at the salvage yard may know more advice. Good luck. By the way, you can find parts like this at car-part.com. It will use your zip code to find the one closest to you.

replace the ECU ( ECM ) with another unit
you will need to get one from another exact same vehicle and there should not be any other problems other than the immobilizer which you can get reprogrammed or have the keys reprogrammed to the ECM
The unit getting hot and draining the battery indicates that it has failed and has to be replaced
Wreckers / junk yards that dismantle your make of vehicle will have comparable units st a reasonable price ( probably an arm but you will keep your leg)
or there are companies that can recondition your existing unit or sell you an service exchange unit for around 2/3 the price of a new genuine unit

I have a Lexus RX300 1999 model and have this recent problem. engine running normally but gear gets stuck in Parking mode and won't shift. had to depress the emergency button on the gear shift and

Hi there,

Some automatic vehicles rely on the brake switch (mounted on brake pedal) to be activated by depressing brake pedal. This signal then operates a relay and switch, to release the gear lever.

Firstly, I would check the brake pedal switch (are your brake lights working?).

If brake switch is confirmed OK, then inspect the relay (and related circuit components) of the gear release switch.

Also check if there is fuel supply coz some model build with hi-low fuelpump control module.

2003 lexus es300 won't start... radio lights and windows work. Tried a jump start, still doesnt work...

Are you saying the engine cranks but won't start, or the engine won't crank ?
If the engine does not crank, you would check for voltage at the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch as well as the ground connections.

I have a 2003 lexus ls 430 my check engine light came on with the vsc off, and exclamtion mark all at the same time and I don't know what that means?

Hi there:
When this comes on as it has it means: When the center differential is locked, VSC control turns off and the VSC OFF indicator illuminates. This is straight from the Lexus diagnostic chart.

The system is faulted in some way so you will need to have the fault memory read out, and then depending on what fault code or codes are stored will determine the type of diagnosis that will need to be performed.

A dealer would be your best bet to get the cause determined. Their scan tool, when hooked up to you vehicle will give them all of the information they need to rectify your condition. After the scan results are found, replacement parts or adjustments can be performed.

Hope this helps.

My 93 Lexus LS400 wont make a sound at start

Since work was recently done to the vehicle I would look to see if any connections were left unplugged or inadvertantly knocked loose. Make sure to check the battery terminals and cables to ensure tightness and a solid connection.

2002 Buick Regal won't start

Hi Debbie , Do you know anything about automotive electrical systems an testing ? Viewing wiring diagrams to see what all is involved in the starting system on your vehicle would be the first step ,then testing the electrical circuits for the starter using a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter .
How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit
Starter Voltage Drop
Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb Enter vehicle info. Year ,make , model an engine . Under system click engine ,then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button then the blue link. Looking at the diagram I see when the key is turned to start it send a crank signal to the PCM - engine computer , if the PCM gets a valid fuel enable & starter enable signal from the anti-theft system it will energize the crank relay sending B+ voltage to the S terminal on the starter solenoid . That is if the park neutral safety switch is OK . You mite try putting the vehicle in neutral to see if it starts then. These switch wear on the inside that could cause a no start problem . You can test from the crank relay ,watch this video VEHICLE RELAYS Operation Diagnosis In the video he uses a horn circuit , your crank relay works the same .

2005 lexu 330, turn off maintenance light

1. With your car OFF, place your key in the ignition and turn to "On". Do not start the car.
2. Find the odometer button and press until it reads the total odometer setting, (not the Trip A or Trip B setting).
3. Turn the key to OFF.
4. Place your finger back on the odometer button, press and hold. At the same time, turn the key back to "On".
5. Hold the odometer button in until the MAINT REQD light goes out...should take about 8-10 seconds.

page 77 of the 2004 Lexus rx330 handbook...
(you will find the answer you are looking for in resetting your maintenance light.)
with the odometer reading visible, (not trip A or trip B..) turn off engine.

While keeping Odo/trip button depressed, turn ignition back on (not starting the engine) You will see dashes (instead of numbers) on your odometer disappearing one at a time. it will be replaced by 0's (zeros).. Release the Odo/trip button and your original mileage will come up....
And your done..... until the next oil change.

Thank you for using fixya and good luck
