I have a 98 Cadillac Deville with "battery not charging" displayed and battery light on, had battery checked and alternator load tested both were fine. Drove 5 miles and anti lock brake light and anti traction control light came on and with in 10 seconds the car engine shut down and would not restart, what could it be?

Low voltage does really strange things to the control modules, so replace the alternator, clear codes, charge the battery and drive on.

Check the alternator, with a multimeter, is pushing correct charge after cleaning all connections to battery and alternator. If the alternator is working properly, then your battery may be faulty, get it tested at a battery shop. The shop will test the battery under load to see where it is for crank power.

Not likely an oil related problem. More likely battery/charging system problem. Have your battery "load tested" and alternator checked for adequate output.

If you replaced the alternator, you might have 1) a loose belt, or 2) a dead battery. The battery can go dead, depending upon how long the alternator was malfunctioning.

Find a reliable service shop and ask them to check the belts and the battery.

Have Auto Zone load test the battery and check the alternator. It free of charge and they will tell you which is bad

OK, sounds like the alternator should be replaced.

you need to do a load test on the battery first to verify its good,charge battery fully,turn headlights on high beam,wait for five min and crank engine with lights on,see if you still have a good cranking time,if you don't replace battery,if you do charge battery up to full again,check voltage at battery post with a multi meter,
should be 13 volts at minimal,now turn headlights on ,heater on,and flasher on and pull in gear,have a friend check voltage at battery to see if it is staying above 12.50 volts,if it is below 12.50 the alternator is not putting out on a load,replace it.if these check out good,check for dome or hood or trunk light not shutting off ,or something else draining battery.

you need to have the battery load tested first,then charge or replace it,then check voltage at battery with a multi meter,start car,turn on high beams,blower motor,and four ways,and pull down in gear and have a friend check voltage at battery again,it should be over 12.50 volts anything lower replace alternator.

sounds like a 12V drain on the system, like a trunk or glove box light that won't shut off.> Could be many. many other reasons why. The way I would find the draining circuit would be to remove the neg cable of the battery. I then would connect a 12V test light between the neg battery TERMINAL and the neg battery CABLE. With a 12V drain the light will shine. I would install into the light a 9V battery powered recepticle to hold computer and radio station memory. Then I remove fuses 1 at a time, then reinstall, at the same time looking for the 12V light to go out. Hope this helps.

Sounds like the alternator is not charging. Test alternator output. Battery needs charge or replacement
