Why are my gauge needles all fliping back and forth.

Yesterday when I started down the road all the gauges in my van went crazy flipping all over the place for about 15 min. This happens each time I start driving. The RPM and MPH needle got stuck together but when I tapped the panel they went back to normal. Why is this happening and how can I fix it.

SOURCE: Gas gauge not working

Hi,
This sounds like the sender unit in the fuel tank is worn or possibly a corroded/ bad earth from the unit itself.
There should be an inspection plate above the fuel tank removal of this should reveal the sender unit and connections, if not can you see on top of it? make sure all connections are clean and not gunged up with corrosion. Try spraying Wd40 or similar around the area whilst wiggling the plugs/wires.
Good Luck, Please press the Blue Button to appraise my FREE! Effort.

SOURCE: Electrical Problem?

For some reason you lost power. Start at the battery, checking connections, check connections on the engine block(grounds), connections at the starter. What is the repair history on the van? Is this problem intermittent? A faulty ignition switch could cause your problem.

SOURCE: 2002 ford e250 5.4. engine temp gauge giving false

Well, it can be a sending unit issue, they are pretty inexpensive, so worth while to just replace it. Do be aware that the temprature DOES normally do what you describe. The condition is called heat soak, where the temp goes pretty high, due to no water circulation, after shutdown. This is normal and some vehicles run fans after shutdown to help. Usually not an issue with properly functioning cooling system that can hold pressure.

Remember the coolant recovery tanks? Their purpose was to recover teh small amount of coolant pushed out during heat soak.

The instrument cluster is a sealed unit, do not recommend taking it apart for that. What I would do is drill a small 1/16" hole near where the stop pin is through the plastic outer cover and use a paper clip or sewing needle to move the fuel guage needle back to the other side of the stop pin. Reseal with a drop of super glue to keep dust out of cluster.

1996 3.1L Pontiac Grand AM all gauges went crazy

sometimes when the battery is too low the gages will go haywire.check you battery terminals for good conductivity and current levels. sounds like a low current problem.computer runs on 12 volts not 11 or 10. low current will give poor performance and bad electrical response.
try that first then look for shorts under the dash ie naked wires or burnt wires.
good luck.

I need to repair my fuel gauge, how do I take the dash apart?

Its all electronic, I'm guessing somehow the needle got flipped over the little black bar and you can't read the level anymore. To take the whole instrument panel out you need to first remove the molding that goes from side to side, it has the vents and blinker in it. Don't yank it out you have to remove the stubborn clips to the blinker and the instrument dimmer. There are just 2 screws at the top above the instrument cluster, the rest is clipped in. After then you will see there is 4- 6 little bolts holding the bezel in take those out and try to flip it over and pull the left side out first. Unhook the main harness and your good to go. Also it helps to put the steering wheel all the way down. Be careful putting the molding back in because once you break the clips it will wiggle and **** you off while driving, little squeaks :( . Hope this helps you out.
