I'm guessing that you got an air lock in your fuel system as a result of your changing the fuel filter... I certainly don't know about a BMW diesel, but in most semi-truck engines, there is a priming pump just for the purpose of getting the air out ... and the fuel into.... the fuel system. I've even been known to fill the filters with diesel fuel before screwing them onto the base.. This is risky because of the possibility of allowing some foreign, unfiltered debris to get into your pump and/or injectors, just because of your putting unfiltered fuel into your filter... Check and see if there is some kind of priming pump close to the filter. Also, a possibility is that you may have an electric fuel pump.... as to where all you may need to do is loosen a fuel fitting on the pressure side of the pump and filter.... and allow the electric pump to purge the system of air.. I confess to my lack of knowledge on your BMW.... but, I do have some basic understanding of most diesel systems... Good luck..

My 2003 td4 freelander diesel bmw engine can crank but engine cant run as well..what should i do?

ok,
all fuses good.
glow plugs test okay.
all filters good. fuel and air
fuel pumps all primed.
try test fuel? using a spray bottle with diesel in it ,past air cleaner point. if that works (runs)for say 3 seconds, the injectors are not injecting fuel.

You might have an air lock in the fuel system. The lines from the injector pump possibly need broken loose at the injectors and cycle the fuel pump several times until nothing but pressurized fuel comes out.

Bmw 320d problems

Diesels can use lots of fuel mainly when the injectors and/ or pump need reconditioning. When the air filter is dirty and needs changing. When the accelerator doesnt' go to full throttle on the stop setting but has clearance to the stop screw. When the engine oil is too heavy from not being changed often enough. When the fuel filters need changing

Need to tune up my truck what will i need to replace

Hi Jeffery, You forgot to say if it has a petrol or diesel engine. In the case of a petrol engine, replace the the oil filter, fuel filter and air filter, and the spark plugs. Other than these items there is little else to do, as the engine performance is entirely controlled by the management system. The only difference between diesel and petrol powered vehicles during service, is that with diesel there are no spark plugs. Remember in the case of a diesel to fill the fuel filter with clean fuel before fitting it to the housing. Doing so will help in expelling the air from the system and make start up easier. Also fill the oil filter with the same multi grade engine oil used in service, so that on start up the engine is lubricated more quickly. Regards John

Have done oil ,air, fuel filters and now its hunting (diesel )

You have trapped air in the system, did you fill the fuel filter up with clean diesel before you installed it. If not remove it and fill it up

I just bought an 03 td4 gs freelander and the oil on the dip stick is black, this is my first diesel car so not sure if this is o. always had petrol and it's like golden syrup in them? :-)

diesel engines do run dirty if this was my car i would change the oil and oil filter as a mater of corse, at lest you will know its been done then, also change the fule filter and have a look at the air filter as well
diesels dont like dirty fule or partly blocked filters, for what they cost its well worth the effort if you have only ever run a petrol engine you will find that the diesel need more servicing more often if you leave it unserviced the engine wont last as long as it could so dont skimp on the servicing or you wont be saving pennies you will be spending pounds
