I need to do this as cheaply as possible. How to fix 1992 Dodge Spirit Ignition problem. Somebody tried to steal it and broke off the black plastic part where you insert your key. fine. Could still start car if I played around with it tho sometimes when turning off the whole cylinder would come out. Now the key is locking into the cylinder, won't turn, the cylinder won't come out, etc.. Can I just go to the junkyard and cannibalize another cylinder and put the very center in where the key goes or do I have to replace the whole thing and get new keys. BTW can't lock doors either - no keys for them.
You can go to the junk yard and get another barrel assembly , but you run the risk that you will have top reprogram the immobilizer
It may be cheaper to get a locksmith involved to fit a new barrel keyed to your existing key and that way the expense of programming the key to the immobilizer is avoided

had the same problem with a 99 dodge van. tow truck driver put the key into the ignition and tapped it a couple of times while turning the key to freed it up and start the engine. works as long as you leave the key in the ignition so i use a second key to lock/unlock the van. hope this works for you. gary
SOURCE: door constantly locking
replace the door ajar switches, they get worn after awhile and barly make contact and that makes the body contol module think the door was opened and closed so i will lock them again, hope this helps

if im not mistaken your colum behind your wheel comes apart in 2 peices...after thast you will see 2 or 3 screws around the ignition switch go from there
SOURCE: Can't get ignition lock cylinder out of switch
there is a pin that comes from the lock cylinder that goes through a hole in the switch and locks it in.normaly you have to turn key to on and tap the pin back inside the cylinder. if you cant turn to on then there is no recess for the pin to tap into.
hers what i do
take the key out
lay it on a vise or similar but lay it on a part of the cylinder not the switch
bash that pin in untill it clears the hole in the swtch
or drill it out, either way you want
the new cylinders, at least those bought from the dealer or not coded that means no wafers or springs are installed
you have to transfer your wafers and springs over to new one in the proper sequence i recomend new ones cause the old ones are worn out along with the key and you will soon if not imediatly have the same problem
just take your old and new cyl. to dealer parts dept. the guy at the counter can code it for you and cut a new key by code. it dont cost that much and its worth it
