It is very unlikely the timing is off. That is not a likely problem with electronic ignitions. The problem is likely a faulty sensor, such as the Idle Air Control valve (IAC) or some other sensor. Take the vehicle to Auto Zone or Advance Auto , and ask to have a scan done on the vehicle. Hopefully the scan will reveal trouble codes that will identify the problem. I would not mess with the timing.
Testimonial: "Thanks Joel, I'll do that, as soon as I replace two brake lines. I had a lady slam on brakes in front of me last week, and I stomped mine and the pedal went to the floor. I rode this thing out for over a mile in rush hour traffic before I could get it stopped. I appreciate the help, I just don't get all of these sensors, The last project i worked on with my pop before he passed was to put a 360 in a 1988 Dakota. This truck would scream, and he was so old school we used points. I'm thinking I'll follow my sons dream of putting a old 4 bolt main 350 in this truck. He was the only other man to drive it, and we lost him 18 months ago, he was 21. I'll shout if I have any more questions. Thanks."
