Tip & How-To about Cars & Trucks

Engine Flush.

I get ask this question a lot. Should I do an engine flush? The answer to that is NO! If you have your vehicle serviced at a quick change lube, they will push services like this to you, especially if your a woman. Jiffy Lube is notorious for doing this. Every automotive manufacturer will state in their warranty, if you do this, they will void the warranty simply because it will cause a major engine failure. Over time sludge and deposits build up in an engine, when you flush it, it breaks up these deposits and they settle in the oil pan. Even when you drain the oil and place a new oil filter on, some of these broken up deposits remain in the engine plugging up the oil lube ports. This stops oil from properly lubing vital parts inside the engine causing engine failure. Products like engine flush are known as snake oils in the automotive repair business. The best and safe way to stop sludge build up or remove it, is to use a good quality synthetic oil and quality oil filter. This will end your sludge problem over time. One more thing, avoid quick change lube centers, any of them no matter if it's EZ- Lube, Jiffy Lube, Wal-Mart and on and on. The people working there are not automotive techs, the have not went to collage or have a degree in automotive technology. No one with a degree in automotive technology is going to be working at a quick lube center for minimum wage, they will be working in a good independent service center or dealership making $22 or more per hour. For more information on this, go to youtube and search Jiffy Lube Scam. There are tons of news story video's on all of these centers.

there was white smoke coming from what seemed to me, from the muffler......so i took it to walmart and he added oil. i was told in the last oil change that i needed my transmission fluid changed....i read that transmission flush may do more damage than good, my car has over 170,000 kms on it. i read also that i can ask for a transmission fluid changed and not flushed. what do i do :(

is is very likely that if you put transmission flush in a vehicle that has done that milage it will do more harm than good,it is fine to use transmission or engine flush from when the vehicle is new but never in a vehicle that has done a lot of milage, just change the transmission fluid & it should be fine.....hope this helps......cheers.

What flushes are recommended for a 1996 Grand Jeep Cherokee with 216000 miles?

Providing that you have maintained the vehicle reasonably well, no flushing should be done. Flushing often disturbs gunk that otherwise would have stayed put for the rest of the vehicles life without doing any harm. Jeeps, especially the 4.0 engines will run far longer than 300K if they are well maintained regularly. Transmission, transfer case and differentials will also last a long time if serviced properly and not abused. I often use a viscosity improver in the lube after 200K. Lucas seems to be the best around. If you use a good quality synthetic in the engine that will gently clean up any gunk and gives the best protection you can get. only draw-back is if you have external leaks it can get expensive.
So, my advice is don't flush anything and use good lubricants, change your oil every 3,000 miles and do regular services on all other components including the cooling system.

I have a 2008 dodge avenger, after I finished making oil change the engine light went on. What would it be the probvlem?

The oil change light is usually mileage related, and just needs to be reset. It does not know if oil was actually changed or not. Check your owners manual, or stop by a quick lube place for directions on how to reset it. This is not a problem.

where can i get a power flush for my vehicle and

You can get this done at any auto repair shop or any quick service place such as a jiffy lube. Cost will be about $70. Be careful with a 99 Taurus, I used to have one, and they are notorious for their power steering problems!
