Tailgate on 2009 gmc sierra won't open - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

SOURCE: truck latch on 1999 gmc sierra

look under the latch and see if you see a metal rod. if you do, pull the rod and it should open.

SOURCE: Tailgate won't latch shut

Lubricate all the components with silicone graphite spray can and keep actuating all levers.
Watch for any obstacles and deformity in latch , strike, ruber seals.

this kind off truck you have just to pry with small screw driver and it will came off easy

SOURCE: tailgate door won't open

Possible that the lock or the lever is jammed which might require you to rest the lock.

Check to see if you can take out the tailgate handle and see if the unit is still connected to both arms that moves to release the pins are still connected and or broken.

My tailgate on my 2004 GMC Sierra doesn't relock after opening and then trying to reclose it. I've had to back off the bolts at the locks to get to rengage. Is there an easy fix for this?
Sounds as if you have figured it out. when you backed the bolts off put some shims behind it. problem solved. Good job

2000 GMC Sierra tailgate won't unlatch on right
You should be able to pry it off. Be careful, if you break the latches when it pops off you will have to replace it. Look on the opposite side of the tailgate and there should be a plate screwed to the tailgate. It is almost the size of the tailgate.

I have a 2002 Chevy 3500 and the same thing happened to me. It turns out the latching mechanism on the left side would not release when I pulled on the latch handle. I stuck a small screwdriver in there to release the latch handle (as I pulled on the latch handle) and it popped open. I then squirted some WD-40 on that latch mechanism because it was hung up. I didn't have any problems after that.
