Hi sounds like the same problem I had crankshaft sensor my battery light came on and the engine would cut out sometimes would start straight away other times took 5mins to start again.
But would get a garage to check fault codes costs about 40pound but could save you 100's as it may be a faulty alternator/battery.

SOURCE: speedo and abs light on bmw 5 series

hello , it sounds like you have a bad speed sensor or all 4 of them , see when the speedo plays dead like that is because (most cases ) the sensors at the wheels are bad due to water and normal driving corrosion , the data for the speedo comes from the abs module that monitors the sensors if the abs does not reed it the speedo will not reed it aswell , it will be good to scan the vehicle to see if you need more than 1 sensor there is one in each tire axel ,good luck

SOURCE: I drive a 1999 bmw 520 the abs and traction

this is to do with the sensor leads on the brakes, cost around £40.00 each from main dealer, mines the same. Bmw fixed the problem by changing one lead and charged me a fortune, then the other lead decided to play up, so best to replace them all.

SOURCE: where is the abs speed sensor on a 5 series bmw?

You have 4 wheel speed sensors. There is one at each wheel located just behind the hub. You can trace it by loacting the black insulated wire leading out from the wheel well and going behind the wheel.

What causes the stability light abs licht traction light al come on and speedo drops out? Could the abs module be faulty?

one of your wheel speed sensors is bad. If the speedo drops out I think it is the left rear wheel speed sensor. Check that before getting into the ABS module....

Speedo suddenly not working and two warning lights appeared on dashboard one being ABS light warning light.

If the ABS (and likely the traction control) light came on at the same time that the speedometer stopped working, you likely have a faulty wheel speed sensor at the right rear wheel. You can test this by swapping the two rear wheel speed sensors (ABS sensors). If the speedometer then works (but the ABS & Traction control lights stay on), replace the sensor that is now at the left rear (was at the right rear). If no change, you may have a fault in the ABS & Traction control - control unit.

Electrical problems bmw 1999 318i

these system all have a common control module, so the lights are related to a single part failure, since parts cost a tidy amount of cash for this car have the dealer use there special scanner and see what trouble code is stored for the problem, whenever the lights are on there will be a trouble code stored by the control module.

ALARM LIGHT ON THAT LOOKS LIKE A TRIANGLE WITH ARROW CIRCLING IT. WHAT DOES IT MEAN

On a 1998 3 series (E36) BMW, this indicator lamp is for the ASC+T = automatic stability control plus traction. It should go shortly after the ignition is switched on implying that the system is OK.
If the indicator lamp fails to go out after the engine is started, or comes on in the course of normal vehicle operation it means that the system has malfunctioned. The vehicle remains operational, but without ASC+T. You a have an 2001 3 series (E46), but I suspect the indicator lamp means the same as the E36 3 series. Look in owners manual under "indicator lamps"

Traction control and ABS lights on.

this could be a fault with the steering angle sensor located at the lower part of the steering colume, a fault read from a dealer will be able to verify this
