Remove the center console, you will see the little orange tang which should be attached to the shifter, sometimes they come loose, re-attach it to the shifter and you are done.

  3. drive works in 1st gear but does not up-shift, at all.
  4. drive works but 3 or 4th gear fail to happen.
  5. in drive the tranny is locked into 2nd gear fixed. this is tranny limp home ,so scan the PCM/TCM for tranny errors.

the so called ON CAR checks.
  • fuses all good
  • levels good, hot/idle, in park L>>>>X<<<<H (between L and H) never over or under. ATF dip stick gandering.
  • scan the PCM/TCM for tranny errors heck ANY ! and share them.
  • check shift linkage if tranny dead, the service manual even shows proving, each selection PRNDL works, even to the point of cant push car in park test. and can push in N. and more, in the book just this 1 test.
  • dip stick end looks like tar, or metal dust or smells burnt. (doomed)
  • and last the SM book shows the tranny pump port checks done at PRNDL
  • the side ports and a 300psi gauge tests, that must pass.
  • Tranny pan filter packed.
  • Tranny filter cracked and sucks air, oops
  • scans show shift solenoids failing, DTC errors. share them.
  • and more, sure.

Replace your Transmission Range Sensor (Also called "Neutral Safety Switch") It is located on top of the transmission housing under the shift lever where the shift cable hooks up.

Wont go into overdrive> and wont take off in the right gear

You have to scan it. The transmission is shifted by the computer and if it detects a problem, it defaults to 2nd gear and will not shift.

Can't do anything more without codes.
