Water Pump Removal & Installation 3.0L (2V) To Remove:

  1. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley.
  3. Remove the bolt and the nut and position the roll restrictor bracket out of the way.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  5. Remove the generator.
  6. Remove the bolt and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  7. Remove the nut, the bolt and the support bracket.
  8. Remove the bolts and the water pump pulley.
  9. Disconnect the water pump inlet hose and the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector.
  10. Remove the bolts and the water pump, and clean the sealing surfaces
To Install:
  1. Install the water pump. Tighten bolts in the sequence shown:
    • Tighten numbers 1-7 to 18 ft.-lbs. (25 Nm)
    • Tighten numbers 8-12 to 89 in.-lbs. (10 Nm)
  2. Connect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector and the water pump inlet hose
  3. Install the support bracket.
  4. Install the accessory drive shaft tensioner.
  5. Install the generator.
  6. Install the roll restrictor bracket, bolt and the nut.
  7. Install the water pump pulley.
  8. Install the accessory drive belt.
  9. Connect the battery ground cable.
  10. Fill the engine cooling system.

    To Remove:


        Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
          Drain the cooling system.
            Raise and support the vehicle.
              Remove the right front splash shield.
                Disconnect the hoses from the water pump.
                  Lower the vehicle.
                    Remove the accessory drive belt.
                      Disconnect the upper hose from the water pump.
                        Remove the A/C compressor support brace.
                          Remove the four mounting nuts and the water pump.

                      To Install:


                          Position the water pump and install the mounting nuts. Tighten the nuts to 18 ft.-lbs. (25 Nm).
                            Install the A/C compressor support brace.
                              Connect the upper hose to the water pump.
                                Install the drive belt.
                                  Raise and support the vehicle.
                                    Connect the hoses to the water pump.
                                      Install the splash shield.
                                        Fill the engine cooling system.

Picture looks like a Ford of some sort. Changing the water pump and t-stat should not cause a no start. Was there any electrical connectors disconnected that may have not been plugged back in? ( coolant sensor ) ??

If its not leaking coolant, its not the water pump. Change the thermostat.

this one is tricky ! raise the engine and look on the driver side right over the alternator, yes it's there in the housing. follow the radiator hose to the engine to make sure, this trick works on all vehicles.
I changed it on a 3.2 same year, and it was impossible without take the alternator out.
the water pump is also in the engine and is a big job, around 8 hours, when it blows, the coolant falls directly in the oil pan.

Where is the cam position sensor on a 1997 chevy 5.7L
The camshaft position sensor (also known as the distributor pickup) is inside the distributor which is driven by the camshaft gear and directly below the water pump, the water pump must be removed to access the distributor to change the sensor. Here is a picture of the camshaft position sensor.

My 1999 gmc jimmy is leaking coolant, how do I know if it is the radiator or a water pump problem??? is this a difficult repair if it is the radiator????
If the coolant is leaking out of the radiator or out of the bottom of the radiator support then it is the radiator. The water pump is attached to the front of the motor. It's directly behind the fan. If the coolant is leaking down the front of the the engine then it is the water pump. Changing the radiator is a relatively easy repair with basic hand tools. I suggest purchasing a Chilton or Haynes manual for your vehicle. It will do wonders for your confidence having pictures and step by step guidance while you do the repair project.

How do i locate and change a water pump in a 1995 chevy caprice?
Well the water pump will be mounted directly to the engine block with two large hoses running from it to your radiator.

When you get the new water pump make sure it has new gaskets in there. Should only be a couple of bolts and it comes right off.

Scrape off all of the old gasket from the engine block before you put the new gasket and pump on.

PS - Might have to drain your radiator first, it has a little valve at the bottom. And PLEASE make sure the car is cold so your poor husband doesn't burn the **** out himself :D

The water pump bolts directly to the engine block, using a gasket for pump-to-block sealing, The water pump is driven by the timing belt and is serviced as a unit.Disconnect battery ground cable.Remove crankshaft drive pulleys and torsional damper,and Right Engine Mount & Bracket.Place a jack under engine to support and slightly raise engine, then remove engine mount bracket.
Remove timing belt cover, then mark belt running direction for reinstallation.
Loosen timing belt tensioner, then remove belt and crankshaft sprocket flange shield.
Drain cooling system.
Remove water pump mounting bolts.
Separate water pump from water inlet pipe, then remove water pump.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
Use a new O-ring on water inlet pipe.
Torque water pump mounting bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).

How to change water pump in 1996 geo metro?
I've found the Haynes Repair Manual that you can get at Auto Zone to be the best one there is. They have step by step instructions with pictures on repairing or replacing just about anything on your auto. You can get them for around $20 - 25. Is yours a 3 or 4 cylinder? Auto Zone has a new service where you can actually look up repair instructions for your vehicle with pictures. Here's the instructions for a 3 cylinder for your year, make and model:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
CAUTIONWhen draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2. Loosen but do not remove the four coolant pump pulley bolts.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4. Remove the lower splash shield.
  5. Remove the air conditioner compressor drive belt.
  6. Remove the lower alternator cover plate bolts, loosen the alternator adjusting bolt and remove the drive belt.
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  8. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
  9. Remove the timing belt.
  10. Remove the oil level dipstick and guide tube.
  11. Remove the alternator adjusting bracket from the water pump.
  12. Remove the water pump rubber seals.
  13. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the water pump from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
  2. Check the water pump by hand for smooth operation. If the pump does not operate smoothly or is noisy, replace it.
  3. Install the pump using a new gasket. Tighten bolts to 115 inch lbs.. (13 Nm).
  4. Install new rubber seals.
  5. Install the upper alternator adjusting bracket and tighten bolt to 17 ft. lbs.. (23 Nm).
  6. Install the oil level dipstick and guide tube.
  7. Install the timing belt.
  8. Install the water pump pulley and leave the bolts hand tight.
  9. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  10. Install the water pump/alternator drive belt.
  11. Install the lower alternator cover plate and tighten bolts to 89 inch lbs.. (10 Nm).
  12. Install the air conditioner compressor drive belt by releasing the tensioner pulley and installing belt.
  13. Install the lower splash shield and lower vehicle.
  14. Tighten water pump pulley mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs.. (24 Nm).
  15. Adjust the water pump drive belt tension and tighten alternator adjustment bolt to 17 ft. lbs.. (23 Nm).
  16. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  17. Refill the cooling system.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable.
  19. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Check for leaks and refill cooling system as necessary.
