could also be a "CEM software upgrade" but I recently found a pinched wiring harness in a passengers side door creating an instrument panel going out in an 01 s40. go figure. If its a software upgrade, it would run about $60-100 depending on the dealer.

When you open the hood, look directly behind the headlight. all the way in the corner and a little way down should be a hook. I usually use a screwdriver and pull directly outward and then a little to the right or left. Then bring the hook back and the corner light should be disconnected. Then you can pull it out and do what you need to do. When you put it back, its a pain because you have to get the hook into a plastic groove. Make sure that you know where the plastic piece is before you start, just get a flashlight and find it. Then use your screwdriver the pull the hook up and get it into the groove. Presto!

I have had this problem for about 2 months. I took my whole cluster to an electronics repair shop and asked them to re-solder the entire board inside the cluster. Afterwards, the problem was still there but I noticed that when I put a little bit of pressure on the heatsink, the whole cluster would come back on. So I took it back to the same shop and they made a shim to mount over the heatsink and so far there are no problems and its been 2 weeks.
