Check the brake fluid first.is it low or no brake fluid at all.is the brake fluid got dried up or leaked out. Sounds like the power brake booster is bad, that is what the master cylinder is bolted too. There is a rubber hose that has a plastic valve in it were it snaps into the booster, Pull that rubber hose out of the booster and off of the engine, Now the end that you took off the engine. You should be able to **** through the line, but not be able to blow through it. If you can then replace the valve, It is a one way valve.
If that is all right then hook hose back up to the engine and start engine, You should hear a major vacuum leak at the valve end, put you finger over the valve and it should stop making noise and engine should smooth out. If it don't the rubber hose must be leaking or the tube on the engine were the hose hooks to is stoped up.
Also check the master cylinder if power booster is replaced. If the brake light is coming and going check the brake light switch. check fig for the internal assembly parts:-- bdea807.gif

To check engine vacuum, connect a vacuum gauge to the supply hose that runs from the intake manifold to the booster. A low reading (below 16 inches) may indicate a hose leak or obstruction, a blockage in the exhaust system (plugged catalytic converter, crushed pipe, bad muffler, etc.), or a problem in the engine itself (manifold vacuum leak, bad valve, head gasket, etc.).
The condition of the diaphragm inside the booster is also important. If cracked, ruptured or leaking, it won't hold vacuum and can't provide much power assist. Leaks in the master cylinder can allow brake fluid to be siphoned into the booster, accelerating the demise of the diaphragm. So if there's brake fluid inside the vacuum hose, it's a good indication the master cylinder is leaking and needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Wetness around the back of the master cylinder would be another clue to this kind of problem.
To check the vacuum booster, pump the brake pedal with the engine off until you've bled off all the vacuum from the unit. Then hold the pedal down and start the engine. You should feel the pedal depress slightly as engine vacuum enters the booster and pulls on the diaphragm. No change? Then check the vacuum hose connection and engine vacuum. If okay, the problem is in the booster and the booster needs to be replaced.
Vacuum boosters also have an external one-way check valve at the hose inlet that closes when the engine is either shut off or stalls. This traps vacuum inside the booster so it can still provide one or two power assisted stops until the engine is restarted. The valve also helps maintain vacuum when intake vacuum is low (when the engine is under load or is running at wide open throttle). You can check the valve by removing it and trying to blow through it from both sides. It should pass air from the rear but not from the front.
Replacing a vacuum booster is a fairly straight forward job. All you have to do is disconnect it from the brake pedal on the inside and unbolt the master cylinder. The pushrod that runs from the booster into the back of the master cylinder must have the specified amount of play.
You will typically find the power brake booster mounted on the firewall attached to the master cylinder. The master cylinder is connected to the brake pedal.

Make sure the emergency brakes are back off and adjusted after pad replacement. A lot of mechanics forget or don't know about this. Also check the master cylinder. Push on brake pedal hard and see if it sinks to the floor, if it does then the master cylinder is bad. If there is air in the brake system it is best to pressure bleed or vacuum bleed the brakes to get the air out. Often when using the two person pump the pedal and hold will not be effective in getting all the air out if a line is broken and then replaced. If the brakes appear hard, you are likely not getting effective braking to all wheels evenly. First, check your brake fluid. If the fluid has become cloudy or black, replace the brake fluid, then bleed all lines.

Inspect all brake calipers for fluid leakage, rotor scoring, and pad wear.

I would suspect that the cause of your "hard" braking is either dirty fluid, a bad master cylinder, or a defective proportioning valve.

Brake cable to tight


depending on the year,make and model of this car you will need to loosen the rear shoes a bit or loosen e-brake cable adjustment,

A few questions here, will car roll easy if on a small incline? or is the problem just that the e- brake is hard to push?

Bad cables may give the effect that brake is too tight but the cables get rusted and so does the e-brake hardware causing a hard e-brake handle or pedal, does the e-brake work when applied?

Brake pedal hard but sitll braking


the brake booster will make the brake pedal hard to push. they get that way usualy when they loose there vacume. if you dont hear a vacume leak with engine running then i would start with replacing the booster

The brake pedal goes all the way to the floor,l need to pump it for effective braking.l have bled the brakes,changed the brake wheel cylinder kits,l even bought a new master cylinder but the problem still...


OK so you have a problem ,to start with you have done most things to fix the problem of no brakes NOW Jack up the front of the car with H/B/off now get some one in the car to work the brake when you say so, next get a small G clamp {infact buy 2} noe put a g clamp on the R/H/F brake pipedo it up only enough to stop the flow,now ask the other person to try the brake pedal {not to Hard ENGINE OFF} was the pedal any better on just the 1 push, if yes slightly then leave it on and do the other side, did that get better, if yes then take off 1 g clamp and do the same to the rear { you might have 1 pipe only in the middle of chassis }but do the same to rear IFrear works that the brakes are good peddel up hard then that is the problem brake so which ever one brings it up to hard brake that the one you need to work on AND LEAVE THE CLAMP ON TILL YOU HAVE FINNISHED IT.then bleed them all jacked up FRONT then REAR and make sure you have both G Clamps in you hand when finnished.

Intermittent no brakes


If the pedal is hard to push, then the power brake booster isn't working. Either the booster isself is bad, or you have a vacuum leak that's making it impossible to produce enough vacuum to operate the brakes well. There's one more thing to check, but is more unlikely. Sometimes if the brake pads are worn out completely, it will have the same effect, but less likely. This is easily checked by removing a front tire and looking at the brake pads.

Stalls or wants to turn off when pushing brakes


Check for vacuum leak within power brake servo unit.
Remove vacuum hose from brake servo and block off the open vacuum line from the engine. Check that engine then runs normally when brakes applied.
Do not drive the vehicle with the vacuum servo disconnected, as the brakes may not be effective. - The pedal pressure required to apply the brakes effectively may exceed your capabilities.

If the brake booster servo diaphragm is leaking it will need to be replaced/repaired.
