Why isn't the alternator charging a new battery?

Alternator could be bad, or not connected which is unlikely. I would start by making sure the connection is good, there are no breaks in the wire, and that a substantial amount of voltage is coming from the alternator (~16V). Although, it is most likely in need of a new alternator.

The battery needs 12.6 volts or more to be in service
When the engine is running you need 14 volts or more
out of the alternator to charge the battery
You can test the alt by testing across the battery term
or the alt output wire & ground to case or motor
Could be the diodes got fried & you need a new alt
Have it tested at parts store, if you can't figure it out
Check all fuses & fusible links first

Sounds like you fried a circuit or two. The battery light means the alternator is not charging the battery which you know.
The charging circuits will need to be checked, it could be a fuse or a fuseable link which is a wire that acts like a fuse.

The alternator may not be getting a voltage signal from the gauge or warning light to activate it, or it may be charging but the current is not reaching the battery due to a problem with the 10 gauge wire.

Have you replaced the voltage regulator?
Unless you have changed the charging system and eliminated it, the alternator does not have a built-in voltage regulator like the newer ones do.

The computer controls alternator output. If the alternator passes a bench test but is not charging at idle speed on the car, it could be the computer or a bad connection in the harness.

Truck will not turn over, gauges all come on but nothing from the engine, acts like dead battery but it is brand new...it did it before and was told it was the battery, put a new one in....worked great for...


your charging system isn't working, if you replaced the battery and it worked for a few days, then its not being re charged after starting, I'm assuming you cleaned and tightened all the battery post connections when you installed the new battery , if not do so ,, charge the battery from an outside source, once you know its fully charged,, use a meter, and start the car ,, check the voltages at the battery posts,, you should be getting a reading of 13.5-14.5 volts, if not your alternator isn't charging the battery

Most auto parts stores offer testing for free. A volt meter can also be used to check alternator output. Connect the meter leads to the battery. The voltage should be at least 12 volts. If it isn't, then find out why. Just because a battery is new does not mean it is fully charged. If the battery voltage is OK, then start the engine and observe the meter. It should now read approx. 13.5-14.5 volts. If it does, then the alternator is charging. If it isn't, then the alternator should be tested. While your at it, you might as well check your belt tensioner for proper operation.
1. leave the engine running and the meter connected.
2. Turn on your lights and other accessories. (heater, radio, high beams)
3. Observe the meter reading.
The voltage should remain between 13.5-14.5 volts. If it doesn't, then determine the cause and repair as needed. If it does, then the tensioner and belt are probably OK. I hope this information is helpful to you and thanks for using FixYa.

unlikely, if it starts the battery is good because it just started the car and the alternator is good because it charged the battery the prior time it was running. i would put some thought into a fuel supply problem, such as the pressure falling off rapidly after a start; or something getting hot in the ignition systrem and failing causing a loss of spark.

Replaced battery and alternator. car runs and either dies or I turn it off and the battery is dead. I have started it and pull the positive battery cable and engine will die


on new cars never pull the cables off while its running, it can fry your computer, charge the battery (i've gotten both bad batteries and alternators from parts stores) have the battery LOAD checked, if one cell is dead,, its never going to charge correctly, and any parts store can do this for you,, once its charged, start the car,, you should have a reading o f `13.5 to 14.5 on the battery posts, if not the alt isn't working, Make sure every single connection is clean, even where the battery grounds against the motor and car body itself,

You can check the alternator with a volt meter. With the engine at idle you should have 13.5-14.5vdc at the battery...turn on your headlights a/c and blower motor on high...to test under a load.
