Large leak?... Fuel Cap not tight or the wrong one is installed. Also, the charcoal canister close valve may be stuck 'open' AND/OR the purge control solenoid valve may be stuck 'closed.'

SOURCE: trouble code shows po452 which is the evap

P0452 Evap.Emission System-Pressure Sensor Low Input

The evaporative emission control system prevents hydrocarbon vapors from escaping from the fuel tank into the atmosphere where they could form photochemical smog. Gasoline vapors are collected in the charcoal canister. The Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor (FTPS) is an integral part of the evaporative monitoring system. The PCM monitors the FTPS signal to detect vacuum decay and excess vacuum. The FTPS measures the difference between the air pressure inside the fuel tank and outside air pressure to check the purge control solenoid valve operation and for leak detection in the evaporative emission control system by monitoring pressure and vacuum levels in the fuel tank during the purge control solenoid valve operating cycles.

What does code p0442 mean

P0442: Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Small Leak Detected
With a P0442, the most common repair is to:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

P4056

As far as I know there is no code number p4056 in the Toyota code book. It might be:
Error Code: P0456 Fault:
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System - Small Leak Detected
Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
Fuel Cap not fully attached.
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System leaking/faulty.
Evaporative emission (EVAP) pressure sensor.
Possible Solutions:
Check Fuel Cap.
Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System.

Have OBD codes P2A00, P0441, P0442, P0446 on my 2003 Highlander. Selling the car in a few months. Does this really need to be repaired before trade-in? Can I just erase the codes?

NOPE CANT ERASE CODES UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED OR THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT SOON WILL STAY ON. CODE PO441 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION EVAP SYSTEM INCORRECT FLOW DETECTED.CHECK INTAKE VACUUM HOSE CONNECTIONS AT THE EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE.IF ALL IS GOOD.THE EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE COULD BE BAD. CODE PO 442 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION EVAP SYSTEM SMALL LEAK DETECTED. EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LARGE LEAK DETECTED FUEL CAP LOOSE OR OFF MISSING. CODE PO 446 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION EVAP SYSTEM VENT CONTROL CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION.

Code says evaporator purge solenoid

Which code specifically? Do not assume you need a new solenoid. Our recommendation will depend on the specific code and some troubleshooting results. I usually recommend checking over all the EVAP vacuum lines and the gas cap too whenever there is a purge valve code. Check the vacuum lines at the cannister in the left rear bumper. I will paste info on the purge solenoid below.

Evaporative Emission Purge Solenoid

Description & Operation
The duty cycle EVAP canister purge solenoid (DCP) regulates the rate of vapor flow from the EVAP canister to the intake manifold. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) operates the solenoid.
During the cold start warm-up period and the hot start time delay, the PCM does not energize the solenoid. When de-energized, no vapors are purged. The PCM de-energizes the solenoid during open loop operation.
The engine enters closed loop operation after it reaches a specified temperature and the time delay ends. During closed loop operation, the PCM cycles (energizes and de-energizes) the solenoid 5 or 10 times per second, depending upon operating conditions. The PCM varies the vapor flow rate by changing solenoid pulse width. Pulse width is the amount of time that the solenoid is energized. The PCM adjusts solenoid pulse width based on engine operating condition.
Removal & Installation
The duty cycle evaporative (EVAP) canister purge solenoid is located in the engine compartment near the brake master cylinder.

  1. Disconnect electrical connector at solenoid.
  2. Disconnect vacuum lines at solenoid.
  3. Lift solenoid slot from mounting bracket for Removal & Installation.

To Install:
  1. Position solenoid slot to mounting bracket.
  2. Connect vacuum lines to solenoid. Be sure vacuum lines are firmly connected and not leaking or damaged. If leaking, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be set with certain emission packages.
  3. Connect electrical connector to solenoid.

Small evap leak

The evap leak is short for EVARORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM, NOT AC EVAPORATOR, AC leaks do not cause the truck to fail emission, most likely the problem is a defective gas cap. Also the code you give (P0244) is a watse gate code, please provide the correct code.
