Change diesel filter and engine oil & filter , air filter, check timing belt, brake pads and shoes then you should be good to go. Diesel filter is a must !!!!!

The only tune-up procedures for diesel engines are to change the fuel filter, drain the water separator and check engine speed. If the injection pump or timing belt have been removed, pump timing must also be adjusted (see Fuel System ). See General Information And Maintenance for filter and water separator service.
Jerry, Drive to a good shop. So many things can cause reduced power light unfortunately. The first step would be to get the truck hooked up to a scanner/computer and have the computer scanned for trouble codes. One thing that you could try is to drain the water from the water separator that is mounted on the frame under drivers front door. If the PCM picks up on water, power is reduced until water is removed/drained. It could be an exhaust sensor that is reading faulty. Unfortunately from here its impossible to tell you exactly what the fault is because there are just so many engine sensor inputs that could cause your problem. when buying diesel fuel filters only buy quality units as the cheaper ones are not fine enough ( micron measurement ) to remove the particles and water that damage injectors and pumps
talk with a service shop that services diesel vehicles and they will tell you where the filter is located
The message may also be telling you that the water trap filter needs draining
Remove the key from the ignition but keep it handy. Important: Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for longer than 90 seconds to prevent the risk of having the airbags deploy! Replace the diesel filter (Follow the instructions that can be found in Toyota service manuals (search www). Remove the diesel filter sensor cable (the one on top of the filter assembly). Make sure the new O-rings seat properly. Close the filter assembly by turning the locking ring until it clicks. Bleed the filter assembly by pushing the little plunger thing on the top of the assembly until pumping becomes difficult. Connect the negative back onto the battery. Insert the key in the lock and turn until the dashboard warning lamps come on, but do not start the car yet. Within 3 to 60 seconds of doing this re-connect the diesel flter sensor cable. The light should be extinguished. Obviously there could be another problem causing the light to remain on (not flashing - steady on). If the light is flashing, then you have water in the system and should follow the answer supplied elsewhere by someone else to drain the water. Now start the car and enjoy clean diesel fuel driving. You should really not wait for the light to come on steady before chnaging the filter. Some fanatics believe every 10,000km is the longest you should wait, but this depends on fuel quality, low or high sulfur content, etc. Rather do it more frequently than having to buy new injectors.
The indicator you see is call a water in fuel warning lamp.

As a diesel owner,you need to know diesel fuel can attract moisture. When condensation (water droplets) collect inside the fuel tank,it will contaminate the diesel.

The corrective action is to locate the drain **** on the fuel filter and CAREFULLY drain the water from the bottom of the filter housing. (with engine off / key out)

The water in fuel warning light will go off as soon as the water is drained.

Use one bottle of RED Iso-Heet to remove any additional water inside the fuel tank.
done one and cant remember ,sorry ,its either a cartridge type or the cannister ,If vehicle runs ok then leave it alone because unless you pick up a load of dodgy fuel then it will last more or less the life of the vehicle.If it has water in it then a light will come on in the dash panel ,Normally i only open the water drain on the bottom on a service just to make sure ,Only get problems with filters on plant machines where murphy or paddy has used a dirty can to fill with diesel
If the car is diesel, then it meands that the diesel fuel filter sedimenter has filled up with water (the filter separates water from the diesel),anyway there is a plastic tap under the filter, unscrew this and let the water out, then pump the black button at the top of the filter to reprime the filter,(also see your user manual that came with the car for explanation) cheers
