2003 300M drops into limp mode

Usually at speeds below 50 mph. Turn off engine, restart and go again but it will not prevent this from happening. Most often occurs when slowing down say at a traffic light.

starter cranks, but engine will not turn over. Starter also sounds like it loses strength and temporarily slows down. A few seconds later, it speeds up again.

the car is going into limp mode due to an engine management fault. have to check what the fault is with a code reader. if the milage is high 100,000+ could be a turbo fault (overboosting), as this will put the car into limp mode.
