My daughter is buying a 1999 VW Beetle and the AC is not working, the driver side window will not go down and the buttons that opens the trunk and fuel door will not work. Will these be really expensive to have fixed? Thanks

I have a friend with a 1999 Beetle. The Window was a pain, ended up taking it a shop. 285 at $90 per hour labor, saved an hour because I had taken apart the door.

AC not working at all? Likley the AC Controller (475) or the blower motor regulator (225).

Wiring is also bad in the one your looking at likely. And wiring jobs are a pain.

It will need a new timing belt at 90K for 600-800. DIY will run you 200.

I am fairly competent with car repair and can usually fix most things myself, but I trust others with wiring issues and computer issues.

Skip that car.

I have a 1999 Beetle. RUN!!!! I am just finishing the physicians assistant program at Stanford University. I bought my wife the "bug", which at the time I thought was a nice car, to drive back and forth to work and school. I bought it 3 years ago and have had nothing but problems with it. Also I have talked to many people, including mechanics who have had the same problems with 1999 VW Beetle. The drivers side window will not roll up or down, the AC or heater is not working at all? The wiring is also bad in the car from the drivers side head light, passenger side tail and brake lights, to the power windows and door locks. The radio is stuck on AM and the 2 of the cheap plastic preset switches have broken off. Finally, as if that is not enough,  3 days ago the transmission only has 3rd and 4th gears. Reverse, 1st, 2nd and 5th gears are gone, not working at all. This is the worst car I have ever had and over the years I have only heard of horror stories about peoples cars and their "lemons". I am sure that it will not come as a surprise to those who are reading this article, but I will never buy another, not just Beetle but, VW again. I hope this helps you. As for the people who have already purchased a Beetle, I can honestly say I feel your pain.RobChico, CA.

The window, trunk, fuel door may not that be that much and may be a simple fix. The A/C can range from just being low on R143a to a bad fuse or to a bad A/C compressor which will cost over $500.00 for compressor alone. Keep me posed, be glad to help. Best thing to do is go for a test drive with the seller and go to a repair shop for an estimate so the seller knows what the repair cost will be and if you decide to buy the car, be glad to help you ave some money to get it to 100%.

Trunk / rear lid won't open

You can try this I think the latch is just slightly missaligned.Did you put something in the trunk and push down on the trunk?Try to push down hard on the trunk where the latch is a few times while pressing the remote. If this works and it opens look for marks on the latch indicating rubing, file down, spray with WD 40.Good Luck.

Battery needs to be recharged after 3 days of sitting.

There is a slow drian being placed on the battery from one of the VW accessories installed on your bug. I had a very similar problem with my daughter's 1998 Beetle, and the cause was traced back to the hood latch. There's an electrical connection to the hood latch, and when the connection fails it places a slow drain on the battery. Although I'm not fully certain, I beleive the connection is part of the circuit that allows the security system to sense that the doors, hood and trunk are all closed.

I also had a problem with the electrical trunk release actuator, and had to have it replaced once. The remote key fob signals a the electrical actuator to open the trunk lid when the trunk release button on the key fob is pushed. If your trunk release operated normally, you probably do not have an electrical problem by your trunk.

About 60 percent certain you problem is located in your hood release circuit. An experience car nechanic should be able to test this circuit using a hand held electrical meter before it is removed and replaced.

Good luck. My daughter's bug has been acting normally ever since the latch was replaced about 2-3 years ago.

Same problem with 99

Try running a hose on the driver's door window to see if the drain hoeles in the driver's door are plugged. Also check the drain holes in the rear window and trunk lid drains. If one of the drain holes is plugged the water will seek the next easiest way to drain (which might be to the iside of your VW Beetle.

Can not figure out how to open my daughters 2006 vw beetle trunk with key. We tryed swiveling the vw badge did not work. Maybe you have to just pop it inside or with key button. Does any one know?

the trunk has no key lock. it can only be opened remote or on the door. in an emergency you can access a manual lock by lowering the center of the back seat and reaching in finding the latch on the underside of the lid
