Your BTSI (brake interlock shift system) is in faulty. When you pressed on the brake pedal, there is a voltage send to the BTSI solenoid which is supposed to unlock so you can shift. If you can verify that the brake switch send a voltage to the solenoid , the solenoid is the faulty part.

BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON WHEN FUSE IS IN

Perhaps the brake switch up under the dash has come loose, the pedal returning to a non-brake position, it's default position when you enter the car, presses up upon a switch.
When you depress the brake pedal and allow the plunger to fully extend this activates your brake lights, this also allows the shifter to be moved out of park, the reason you need to press brake pedal to shift car.
So there is a chance someone kicked the switch loose or that is is defective and needs to be replaced, just follow the arm of the brake pedal upwards from where your foot presses and you will find it, you may have to remove a panel that is supposed to prevent any feet from touching the wiring while you drive...

99 mercedes-bens c-230 wont shift out of drive

There is a safety device that operates off of the brake pedal that maybe is not working properly. When shifting transmission depress brake pedal. Try this, depress brake pedal as far as it goes, turn key to off position as if you are goig to remove, while pressing on brake try shifting transmission to park. I hope this helps.

Shift lever lock won't release when brake pedal is

do the brake lights work? most of the time the problem is a broken wire at the brake light switch under the dash on the brake pedal. the ECM does not see the signal from the switch so it won't allow the car to shift from park.

My car starts and all but i can't get in to come out of park, what do you think is the problem

First, check to make sure your brake lights are coming on when you press the brake pedal. This sounds strange, but the brake light curcuit is what powers the shift interlock safty solenoid. That is the solenoid that makes it impossable for a child to shift out of park without pressing the brake pedal first. If the brake lights don't work then you will need to check the fuse for the brake lights first. If that is OK then you will need to do some diagnostics on that curcuit.

If the brake lights are working;
It can be the interlock solenoid inside the shifter assembly, or something mechanical.

Check you owners manual for instructions on relesing the interlock manually so you can drive the car. It is usually a small slot or pin hole next to the shifter that you can insert a small pin or something and press down to release the shifter. I wouldn't recommend driving the car if the brake lights are not working.

My 2000 lincoln town car is stuck in park...won't switch over to drive....what do I do???

The brake must be applied before you can shift out of park. There is a switch under the dash at the top of the brake pedal that is activated when you press the brake pedal. I've had the wires come off the switch on my lincoln.

My transmission will sometimes not shift from park to drive. I turn the car off/on and press the brake pedal and it then sometimes shifts. Whats up?

Most cars those years have a brake pedal interlock system. Sorry I'm a chevy mechanic, but our system is the BTSI (or brake transmission shift interlock) solenoid. After the car is started, the brake pedal must be applied to activate a solenoid which unlocks the shift cable to the tranny and allows shifting. We have a number of vehicles with issues of a bad solenoid or its too weak to unlock the cable. I know Ford has a similar system, but I can't tell you in detail how it operates or where it is. Check with a parts store or Ford dealer for more info.

Cant change gear from park to drive

its a safety switch located either on the brake pedal support or the safety release located in the steering column.
you press the brake pedal and the switch sends power to the release, that allows you to shift the gear selector out of park.

Automatic ford escort 1998 will not shift out of "park"

There is a switch between the brake and the transmission. I forget what its called but unless you have your brake pedal pressed your car will not shift out of park. If you do have your brake pedal pressed there may be something wrong with the sensor.

Audi Quattro A6 will not go into drive

It's the brake pedal switch. There is a switch down on the pedal arm that closes when you press the pedal down, and sends a sensing voltage to the controller, telling it the brakes are applied. This allows the transmission lock to disengage so you can shift out of Park. When that switch fails, the lock won't disengage. You need to replace that switch and you'll be fixed.
