Donna, check trans mission fluid level, top up if required and try reverse. When checking fluid, does it smell burnt, if it does it may be worn internal parts of transmission and need service or rebuild. show your appreciation by pressing the helpful button and follow me on fixya for more tips and info.
This is usually an indication that the valve body inside the trans mission is allowing for to much pressure to build. There is not much you can do about it without rebuilding the transmission.
sounds like a rod or cable out of sync good place to look is under hoon on trans mission you might need to put on hoist!!! could be in sterring colum linkage??
