Hello, My BMW e38 740i 1994, 5 speed automatic transmission isn't shifting to 5th gear unless I manually the gear to 4th gear and then to shift it back into drive, when cold the car shifts all the gears till 5th gear perfectly it's after the car warms up and is being driven for a while that the car starts shifting and stops going to the 5th gear and remains in 4th gear with high rpm. I've checked on the net most people have said mismatching tires in size or make may cause this but I've driven this car on the spare tire which is completely in size and make and never had this problem, this problem has occurred while all 4 tires are same in size. Also the transmission fluid and filter has been changed 1 year ago. Please help on this, I will really appreciate your help. Thank you Omran

SOURCE: 1994 Geo Metro Automatic Transmission

There is a transmission controller that is located under the dash beside the right hand side of the steering column. It is held on to a bracket by two 10mm bolts. A change in that transmission control computer will make the transmission shift like new

SOURCE: Hello, My 1994 BMW 740i is not shifting into 5th

IMO it's more likely that you have the wrong grade of ATF. It's very important to have the correct grade. The following site shows this:
http://www.nairaland.com/1364064/automatic-gearbox-problems
each car manufacturer has recommended grades of Automatic Transmission Fluid, BMW is no exception. the following website for BMWs may bring you more accurate data:

Apparently CTSC is the supplier for BMWs via the web.
Generally auto gearboxes have drain plugs and filler plugs to enable oil change in routine maintenance. But I would definately go back to the garage where you had the last service and ask politely about the grade of ATF used, before considering an 'oil change'.
Good Luck

BMW E46 ZF 5HP19 trouble code P1732 P0733 P0734. My car only has 110K miles, transmission fluid has just replaced. It was dark, dirty, not burned, has some sludge but no metal shavings. After driving for...

Yes, this could be the shift solenoid. Was the transmission filter changed at the same time as the fluid? Dirt in the system can affect some of the transmission sensors tripping Trouble codes. I cannot be sure what the P1732 code is as some codes can be very vehicle specific but it appears to refer to the transmission or on of it's sensors.

P0733 - Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio.
P0734 - Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio.

EGS: Ratio monitoring, gearshift 4-5/.

Gear ratios are monitored from the input and out shaft speed sensors. Takes a scanner to watch the speed signals. These sensors are magnetized. If to much metal collects on them, this could mess with the signal. Could be a bad wire or plug to the sensor. Reading the code is just the first step. Next comes diagnostics. Making sure everything on the outside of the transmission is doing what is supposed to do, then going inside it.

Does Shift solenoid A&B control shifting into 5th gear on an automatic transmission?

First check the transmission MIL code , that will tell you if it is the Over Drive lock solenoid mal functioning , Do a tranny oil change with filter ,then replace fifth gear pressure solenoid , when you are there already .

When do I use the d 5 gear in acura 2003 tl 3.2 liter

Pretty much all the time!

D3, D4, and D5 are all just *DRIVE* like on any automatic transmission, EXCEPT
that the number next to the D is the "highest gear the automatic transmission will go into".
The Acura just gives you a choice, in case you don't want to go into a higher gear (like if it's slippery traction or a steep hill, etc.)

1 means: Manual gear. FIRST GEAR ONLY.
2 means: Manual gear. SECOND GEAR ONLY.
D3 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 3rd gear.
D4 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 4th gear.
D5 means: Use automatic transmission, but engine will never shift above 5th gear.

I own 1994 Acura Integra with a 5 speed manual transmission that recently started to develop a gear whine between shifting 1st to 2nd gears and 3rd gears--less so between 4th and 5th gears. What do you...

If the whine is there than the main bearing is already worn adding fluid will not save it, you will have to swap it or rebuild it. sorry i know you were hoping for something better.
